thanks for your reply mate! my egr is blocked off and i got the carbon cleaned out at that same time by my mechanic( so in theory it should be impossible to get built up again right?) i will try the things u suggested tomorrow. my fuel filter was changed about 4k kms ago when i got it serviced. i use caltex premium diesel so my next tank i will try shell. i dont ever really run my fuel down that low. usually put some in when its about half below the last mark on fuel gauge, so i dont know how it could get clogged up if u have any ideas? will auto one or super cheap have the maf cleaner? i will do those things and if still does it i will replace fuel filter and fuel hose! thanks alot for the info mate!

Given it's had a fuel filter change, and the manifolds are clean, I would say 99% it's your SCV. Try and clean it up as Dave has said, otherwise time for a new one I would say

G'day mine had this same issue. It turned out to be the EGR valve sticking. All good now.

I realise this thread is all about MN surging issues but I have to say I am experiencing identical issues in my 07 ML GLXR 3.2L (225,XXXkms)

http://responsiveengineering.com.au/114 ... 5/product/
This appears to hold the issue at bay for a while but as I am having a long range tank installed I haven't had the tank full in 2 weeks to dilute the product correctly so I have been waiting... and now the issue has returned with a vengeance. Yesterday it even dropped into limp mode decelerating for a round about... (YAY CANBERRA!)

According to Cowboy Dave's detailed list of common causes I only have a couple of things to rule out.
(thank you!)

Just out of interest, was yours the kind of pinky colour or the blue one?

Mine was the pink one.

The spare I picked up from the wreckers didn't work and was throwing codes - the internals were seized and couldn't get the spindle to budge, so decided to try and clean the original up.

Mine is pink too but the blue ones seem more common I think.

My 2010 MN has just started doing the surging thing since the 60k service.
At first it only happened a couple of times a week, now its constant.
I can recreate it when going up any sort of incline at a steady throttle at between 1700 and 2000 in 5th.
I just rang Eagers and got told to put in some injector cleaner and take the truck for good thrashing on an open road. If that didnt work then bring it in but they need 1 and a half weeks notice.
God I miss Lee :(
PS, no mods at all

Try a quick and easy trick by adding a 300ml dose of Castrol Activ 2T (FC Rated Mineral TwoStroke Oil) into your tank with your next full fillup. If it's due to a sticky SCV valve the extra lube effect offered to the fuel by the 2T will free it up.
From there, you can either just stick with using the 2T for each fillup but, drop the dose rate back to 100ml per tank or, try polishing up your sticking SCV valve as per GreyTriton's repair instructions or, take it into the Dealer and pay them lots of your $$$ to replace your SCV... ;)

Or get a new one under warranty.

I tried cleaning the MAF sensor with CRC cleaner.
This made a difference for a short time but the issue came back.
If its heading towards the SCV it "should" be done under warranty but the dealer I rang just didnt seem interested.
I might try the cleaning of the SCV over the weekend.

Tweak the pins on the maf plug and add dielectric grease to the terminals for good measure

Hmm .. as a new Triton owner .. all very scary. Hopefully this is only representative of a small percentage of vehicles?

Ours (<1000km) seems to have "issues" holding low speeds without mucking about revving and whatnot. I'm assuming - and hoping - its a normalish behaviour with cruise and/or auto on slight inclines, etc.

What's with Caltex diesel causing "issues" with fuel filters, PCV, etc?

I just noticed on first fillup from new, that my wife filled up at Caltex. Do we need to avoid it?

My last fill was vortex diesel and it now blows a little smoke. I try and use bp ultimate or shell as it seems to run cleaner and smoother just this time i was in a rush and running empty so had to. Also don't seem to get the same economy from vortex as the others either, about 70-100km less before tge li h t comes on

Use caltex Vortex diesel in our prado for the last 210,000k's and have never had any issues with it ! Have tried bp in our triton and we get less k's per tank than the vortex. Not sure what's going on with people.

Its strange. I used to get more on vortex than bp ultimate but since I've moved to the sunshine coast from brisbane, i get more on ultimate. Maybe the caltex servo is putting regular diesel in and selling it as vortex
