I have the scangauge and would buy the ultragauge now. My view is that the ultragauge offers a bit more flexibility with what/how it displays and it's cheaper last time I looked. I've had codes from dongles but if you just connect it with the motor and everything off and then leave it alone it will be fine. It's only if you stuff around with the plug and cause funny voltage readings that you will get a code and even that will clear itself after a while with no issues.

Just got a scangauge a few weeks ago. cant fault it.

simple to use, no wiring required. just plug and play.
a very useful tool indeed.

The 4 gauges i watch are voltage... intake air temp... coolant temp... and my favourite is boost psi...

it will clear map cels caused by egr blanking...

i also used it to set my boost with a manual boost controller which i just installed.

for me it is a must piece of equipment for my ml.

$10 OBD dongle plus whatever you paid for the device that you're then going to display the data on. Fine if you already have a compatible phone though.

Scangauge will be outdated in the near future, the tech guys are getting right into the new cars and ECU's now.

No doubt the Scangauge techs are in the race as well.

Watch in the next year or so for some major developments regarding OBD11 readers.....

They will start to add more advanced reading/logging of engine behaviour and tuning options 8-)

Here's one for the PC gurus out there of which I ain't. Looking for a program to run on the XP windows machine I have installed in the dash. Needs to have a boost gauge so I can get a boost controller sorted. Code clearing would be necessary too. Any ideas please?

Not too sure if it'll do what you want but I have some software somewhere that I ran on my laptop. Will try and find it and see what it's called

Any of those that will connect to OBDII will be able to give you readouts from any sensor in the vehicle. Most seem to have the option to have a series of gauges on the screen that you can select the source and probably layout/design. I'd imagine that they can have overlimit alarms too, probably just visual but maybe audio as well. I know that Centrafuse is very configurable.

With regards to the OBD2 dongle, do any of you guys have a preference for bluetooth or wifi ?

I plan on viewing the info on my android phone or getting a small android tablet to mount in the car.

Thanks.

I've tried both and found bluetooth better. Having said that, the wifi was with an early ipad and the bluetooth with a HTC phone so the conditions weren't exactly equal.

Under the dash on the clutch pedal side of the steering column.

I'm sorry in advance but....
If someone has to ask where to plug a scan tool into....then be thankful they give relatively superficial access into the OBD system. Sometimes a little knowledge is a very dangerous thing.

Location for obd sockets are pretty much standardised across nearly all vehicles.... I didn't know either once upon a time. :)
