4D56 advice

Postby Tommy1985 on Wed Dec 16, 2020 8:57 am

Hey guys,

I'm currently looking at a 2012 Challenger from a dealer with a 4D56 in it and 180,xxx on the clock.

I took the car to my mechanic yesterday to get the engine checked over. He noticed a few things, firstly being that the coolant reservoir was unusually full. He checked the radiator, which apparently had quite a lot of pressure after only a short drive, however he did mention that diesels can run hot? There was also a bit of calcified coolant on the edge of the radiator which he said could just have been a spill or possibly signs of something else (known cooling issues).

He did a test to check for any consistent pattern or stream of bubbles by using a specialised funnel in the radiator whilst running the car for a while (I'm not sure what this test is called) but did not see any evidence of this. Someone might be able to explain why he did this?

I'm not super familiar with these cars / engines so I would like a bit of advice regarding the cooling issues these engines have faced and factory defects and if people think this might be too much of a gamble to go with?

At this stage I don't have any info from the dealer about earlier engine replacements or 'cooling system service campaign' in the past.

Any information would be so greatly appreciated! Thanks guys.

So I've just found out it does have a 127kpa sticker on the radiator cap I'm guessing meaning it's had the service campaign?

It needs a new engine.

The test is part of what mitsubishi call a stress test, looking for combustion gases in the coolant.

Most of the failures are covered by warranty, but if it has has previous repairs or replacement engine from another source (wreckers) then they can and will refuse assistance.

The calcified cooalnt is a sign of radiator failure. If you buy this car and take it to mitsubishi like this they will want to replace (at your cost) it before doing their own checks

I would steer clear.
