Reversing Cameras

Re: Reversing Cameras

Can I please ask a big favour off the reverse camera guys ?

I can see two pics above of where to locate the camera, can we see some more please.

With and ARB rear bar installed I need to get the camera as high as possible, I also like to see the tow ball as a reference point as well. My current spot is too low, I have just spent an hour fiddling trying to find the ideal spot and it looks like I may need to attach a small drop down bracket to mount the lense high next to the number plate.

Pics and suggestions welcome.

Mines here. Its a really thin plate there so it was easy to cut the hole.

Thanks Smeghead,

I should have posted a pic to show where my camera currently is, which is basically the same place as yours, this was fine with the std rear bar and step but now that I have moved to the new ARB setup it is way too low.

I need to get a rev Camera but unsure of how good the view is when camera is mounted down low.
I want to be able to see the tow ball.
Was thinking of mouting on the canopy anyone else done this with success?

I have already held mine in place with a rag to next to the top left corner of the number plate and had it angled where I could see the tow ball, my camera comes with angled washers for focusing downward.

It looks like I am possibly going to attach a bracket near this area going down and then mount the camera there, it means fixing this bracket to the above bodywork just below the tailgate. This will also give me the option to bend the bracket into what ever position I like.

Also, I am sure that Smegheads and my position for that matter as well does not let you see the towball, you need to go higher.

No worries mate... give me a shout if you need a hand

Here are some pics. Sorry about the quality, took them with my phone and sun was in a terrible spot.
Its hard to see in the pic, but the bottom right of the screen I can just see some the plastic off the rear step and that gives me my mark.

I used a bit of pvc pipe to increase the downward angle on the camera. Looks like my gasket has sh!t itslef

Here's where I have mine mounted:

Sheltered from the sun, rain and frost. Angled down slightly.

On a butterfly bracket that can be flexed by hand to move if necessary.

My screen is a flip and swivel style, mounted on the windscreen with double sided tape so that it covers a small portion of the rearview mirror. Can be flipped up out of the road if required. Very intuitive position to have it, as I can focus on the mirror and rear camera at the same time.

170 degree 1 lux camera gives great wide view at the rear, including tow ball and rear step.

I was going to mount the screen where my iPhone is in this pic, but I quite like the screen where it is. (iPhone plugs into Alpine HU for music and charging)

I don't have the camera wired up to the reverse switch - mine is on all the time, but there's a switch on the screen to turn off if required (eg: night time).

Cheers

Can't recall exact price, but it was around $400 fitted for the reverse camera setup (had it done the same time as the new head unit). Not cheap, but all good quality gear that will (hopefully) last a while. A locally owned car audio place did the install.

Cheers

I actually think that's a pretty good price !!

All of our work vehicles (site utes, trucks & service vehicles) are fitted with the reversing camera that has the monitor installed / replacing the rear vision mirror. So when you put the vehicle into reverse - the rear vision mirror turns into the monitor (well half of it). I think from memory they are about $800 a pop !!

I currently use an external mounted camera as shown in my photos.
This has built in Infra Red night vision globes. I think it is only 120° angle which doesn't distort as much as the wider ones, but doesn't show as much either.
I tilt it down for hooking up to the trailer or caravan which works a treat.
The con with this camera is with the night vision - both camera and LED's are behind the glass. When it clicks over to night vision some of the infra red reflects back off the glass into the camera reducing clarity. This is more pronounced when there is dirt or water on the camera. As my rearview monitor has two inputs I might get another camera and mount to the top of the canopy looking down. I have also run extra input lead so I can alternatively use the second input for the caravan when I get round to mounting a reverse camera to it.
I also had a wireless camera which operated through my GPS. It used to flicker in and out of tune al the time plus I like to keep the GPS out of sight most of the time to prevent some lowlife smashing the window to steal it.
Camera is powered via pushbuton switch on the dash near the mirror control switch.
With the canopy on Rear vision through the headrests and tinted rear window on the cab and canopy is very minimal except on the brightest of days so I like being able to leave the camera on when not in reverse, plus it can take a few seconds to come on once powered.

Probably not much help as it's a differently mounted camera but here goes:

The screen shot was taken at night so not that clear.

I was using a wireless one similar to yours Greedy, only it didn't have the LEDs. Found I had to insert tapered washers behind it to get the right angle.

Mine's not wireless. And the lens is adjustable for vertical angle. 8-)

Is there any particular brand out there that are better than others? I've had a look around & they dont seem to be overly exxy...there's a couple of different ones that either have a seperate screen like rushN's or a rear view mirror clip on monitor like Tritium's.
You can sit there complaining, or you can knit me some seat belts.
