Postby viking shippy on Tue Jun 26, 2012 3:03 pm

Thought a battery survey would be Helpful
as a few of us are having battery trouble in these colder months

What brand battery : supercharge
size; : n70 zzl
How old. : 2yrs
Cca. : 660
Comments;
leaks acid out of the vents whilst on rough tracks
2years old and getting sluggish on cold starts
This is the largest size that will fit in the standard plastic catch tray.

Century Ultra High Performance Overlander 4WD

Part NO: N70ZZL4WD

Rating: 760CCA

Approx 3 months old

Comments: Great battery so far, big step up from the old original battery which I think by the time I replaced it was 5 years old. It really needed changing.

Cold starts are now no longer a problem, and with the installation of the new battery, it reset the fuel calculation computer. My car also started beeping at me when keys where in the ignition and the door was open...but it only does that intermittently now...I am not sure if thats because of the battery or just the overall electrical system etc. Anyway, handles the winch well, now I just need a second battery!

I have that same century battery mentioned above. It also has a little sight glass thing that is supposed to change colour when it needs water added. Downside is that the little filler caps are covered by a flap so you have to undo the nuts that hold the battery down and remove the cross bar thing to open the flaps etc. Not a regular job since it has the sight glass thing but still a mild PITA. Got mine in advance of putting the winch on just in case.

I also added some Inox when it was new (the makers of Inox cover an extra 12mths warranty if you do this)

Yeah I went with the Inox approach as well, figured it couldn't hurt.

In answer to the other question above, I don't think I've had any acid spills when offroad from either this or the original battery. Could it have been over-filled maybe?

nah don't think so has the same flush fillers as century,I haven't touched it since new,the sight glass is still green ,the only other thing is its getting the shit boiled out of it ,by to much voltage I'll have to investigate more with a multi meter and a load test.

Original Battery, lord knows brand etc.

Purchased vehicle Sept 2006, still seems happy enough to start the vehicle on cold mornings.

ABR sidewinder does a sort of insulated foil kind of wrap thing to help keep the heat off batteries - I was worried mine was getting cooked because it gets awfully hot under there but it seems to be okay. Someone here got the wrap number and threw away the plastic battery guard, can't remember who now.

^^ Yep good call. I thought my chip was cooking but it was only the under bonnet temps.

I could hardly touch it and the battery was bubbling inside

Was it steane?

I still got the original battery, been great til this winter, doesn't like the cold starts, although that could be me only driving 10 mins to work an 10 home again an that's it, prob not getting full charge.

I'll edit this later with my dual battery details, also under hood.

i think Geek unloaded his battery surround to accomodate his ARB compressor or some other wonderful gadgets he has under there. pretty sure he has a spare motor under there, it goes like stink. :o :o

Mine is a century- looks I'll be up for my third battery in 4 years.

the sight glass is black, and this is evidence of acid leak/ boil out of one of the cells.
