Just a quick correction for anyone fitting the fan, it's a M5 X25mm bolt,

My fan is all fitted and I'm loving the results, thanks to all who put the data together for this mod

M5 X25mm is too small I just found out when trying to fit :( I assume M6 is the correct size

There must be some disparity between vehicles, I found the 6mm too big, I ended up just drilling out the thread and using a nut and bolt arrangement,
I do Appolagies if I have sent anyone on a bum steer

I haven't got the fan plug in the ml, however, has anyone sussed out whether the signal to drive the fan relay is available at the etacs?

I helped a fellow triton owner install an aliexpress thermofan yesterday. This vehicle was an 09 ML glxr with no plug for the factory wiring in the relevant spot. Which made life a bit tricky.

Anyway in the hope this might assist others it is possible to pick up a trigger from the air con compressor trigger near the relay box. Or if you're keen you can actually see a single wire connecting to the top of the compressor which might be just as easy to tap into if you removed the battery for better access.

Anyway in the diagrams you will see a connector labelled A28. It's a 12 pin black connector and is secured to the top of what is probably the wheel arch and located in the gap between the battery and relay box just to the front of the relay box. It's a bugger of a spot really. Despite being 12 pin there's only maybe 6 or 8 wires going into it (I didn't count). There's a blue and white wire going to pin 4 of the plug (which is the third pin away from the battery when you're looking down at it from above). If you put a test probe on this wire (stick a pin in the plug from the direction of the headlights) you will find it goes live when the AC is turned on but cycles on and off with the AC compressor.

If you peel off a small amount of black tape between the plug and the next big branch of loom you can get maybe 3 or 4 inches of wire to work with. I cut it, bared the ends and crimped some connectors on there with a new wire added to one of the crimps to trigger a 40 amp relay mounted nearby which now drives the fan.

If you got a bit more aggressive with tape removal you might get a bit more free wire to play with, which would be good because I can tell you this was like bloody microsurgery the way I ended up doing it.

Anyway we wired it all in with a fused positive feed to the relay. On testing the thermofan kicked in as the AC came on and then cycled on and off with the compressor kicking in. In future it might be cool (pun not intended) to add in a manual override switch so you could turn it on without the AC running if you had some sort of radiator cooling problem as these fans move some pretty serious air.

Hopefully this helps other plug-less triton owners.

I'm paying the price today I can tell you. I should have mentioned (but now take it for granted) you should use a step or milk crate for these chores as it is bloody hard to reach in there otherwise.

The ole bunnies is one of the last bastions for guys (masters pretty good also), 90℅ of shopping centres are girly shops.

So do you drag along the empty horse float to bunnies CD? Just in case? must be something there you haven't got.

I love bunnings

I'm the same as you CD

Soon as I seen the factory rubber mounts on the challenger for the fan I knew where to go and what Isle

The few times I've been to masters I thought to myself they seem to have some better power tools available

You can never have enough tools cause you never know when you will need it :P

I rate Masters above Bunnings actually at that level. Fortunately for me the nearest Masters store is a long way away.

I also rate Jaycar, Supercheap, and some of the bigger Repco stores for the same sort of aimless contemplation. And of course autobarn, auto1, autopro. You get the idea...

I wouldn't rush to say you're the same as me mate

You can't really describe Masters without covering their draws of Champion product. Supercheap will typically have one of those spinning displays with a few trim clips and bolts and stuff whereas Masters has about 20 drawers full of every fitting, hose joiner, trim clip, crimps, split pin, rubber washer etc etc you could ever want. Well nearly all of them anyway but way more than anywhere else I've ever visited at least.

Agreed on the power tools but it would be better if they also stocked Makita too...

I hate Bunnings and masters increasingly the quality of hardware stock is cheap Chinese crap charged at a premium...I frequent that place a lot.....love the numpty at the door.....hi how's goin.....yer same as yesterday.....stock items are there one week and gone the next week never to be stocked again.....very frustrating...like how hard is it to stock bosch jigsaw blades...bottom line ..it's about profits not service or what the tradie wants needs...
