Trailer - Brake/Stop lights not working

Trailer Brake lights fault

Postby SLIMaxPower on Sun Apr 19, 2015 10:13 am

I have the all in one led lights on my trailer and both brake lights have stopped working.

Don't have a multimeter with me to check but I presume both lights wouldn't just stop working ?

Indicators and hazards work.

Check the terminals in the plug. I had that happen on a hire trailer once and it was just a poor/loose connection on one pin where the plugs mate

Check the hidden/sneaky/pita fuse beside the battery.

brake lights are all good on truck. connections are tight, both plug and socket are new. the trailer is attached 24x7. will have to pull the socket apart when I get home.

I have been having the same problem with my left indicator. Trailer lights work when on my other car but not on the triton. i asked mitsu to have a look and they said there was no issues with the plug. Any ideas?

After pulling apart the socket and plug I checked the fuse and guess what, it had blown. But hazards and indicators still worked on trailer.

PITA alright.

There should be a small wire coming off your positive battery terminal and the fuse should be less than 12 inches along that wire

If it's like mine then that little white tag you can just see attached to the red wire should say something about being a mitsubishi trailer harness.

Trailer - Brake/Stop lights not working

Postby billsmith01 on Tue Jul 03, 2018 1:55 pm

Mitsubishi Challenger PC 2014 - trailer brake lights not working

Problem has me stumped

A bit of history
I purchased factory fitted towbar before delivery. All has been working well for 3-4 years
I have also fitted the aftermarket genuine Mitsubishi harness to use a Tekonsha P3 controller
I have also fitted an aftermarket controller for Alko Sensabrake (EVO controller)

All has been working well up until last night

All my trailer lights and electric/hydraulic brakes work except the brake lights

There isn't +12v at the car socket when brakes applied
I am suspecting there is something wrong with the trailer ECU (Lumen SST-4000G factory fitted - Located in cargo area adjacent to bottle jack space)
There is +12v going into ECU.
The ECU works correctly for indicators, clearance/parking lights so I am not too sure if that is the problem

Does anyone know if there a hidden fuse dedicated for the brake/stop light specifically for the trailer harness?
The owners manual doesn't list anything other than the normal stop lights (which are working)

I have checked the under hood fuse block and the in-line fuses fitted direct to battery +'ve and all seem OK.

Brake/stop lights work on the Challenger - just the trailer is not working

This was fun at 2am in 2degrees before I gave it up - cold

Thanks

Probably find the tail lights don’t work either, but the indicators do.

There is a seperate feed from the battery into the car loom behind the left hand headlight. It has an inline fuse that provides the power for the stop and tail lights. Check that.

Essentially the cars stop and tail power feeds to the cars lights are used to switch the 2 relays under the back of the tub. The relays switch the power that comes directly from the battery through to the trailer socket for tail and stop lights.

Also there will be a second feed for the brake controller, so don’t confuse the two.

Thanks Rohan

The tail lights (and the turn indicators) do work - it is only the stop/brake lights which do not work.

The ECU has +12v connected to it so the supply fuse is OK too

My ECU doesn't have any relays - it is all solid state - I opened it up last night.

I have continuity of all wires from ECU to trailer socket.

At the input side of the ECU, I have
Left turn
Right turn
Tail / park

There is no brake/stop signal going into the ECU

Next step is to try and trace the stop/brake light wire back to the terminal blocks in the passenger footwell

Does anyone know which of the 5 connecting blocks in this location has the stop/brake wire? A circuit diagram would certainly help

Cheers

Set up anything like viewtopic.php?f=21&t=18206&hilit=trailer+fuse#p495790 ?

It's a pita fuse to find if you don't know it's there.

Yours sounds different to mine. Mine is a genuine unit and has no ECU, just 2 relays underneath the back of the tub on the left hand side.

One relay is controlled by the tail light feed and the other by the stop light feed.

The other functions just go straight to the plug.

Sorry, I completely missed the fact that you have a Challenger. Mine is a MQ Triton, so no wonder the difference.
