Name that turbo

Postby dieselweasel on Tue Jun 20, 2017 1:56 pm

Can anyone tell me what turbo this is and whether you can tell from the unit what ecu I'd be running? Date on plate for vehicle is 05/08, can check other details from the plates too if you need anything.

Reason for wanting to know is just interested in what 20 minute mods there are for this turbo,

Can I fit a Manual boost controller?

Washers on the wastegate bracket?

As I've stated before I've got a European rail chip for mk4 L200 that may go on but for now just wondering what else i could tamper with, I'm not building a track car, I just have time to burn and I'm bored

Thanks gang

Post up a picture of your build plate.

There's 3 plates, I'll just show all of them, what I meant in my first post was just to identify said turbo so I know what can be done and in what way, eg, I know I can't adjust wastegate like the turbo in the 3.2, but my Xmen power is dyslexia where I not only confuse myself, I confuse other people, it's easily my best feature along with terrible sense of humour.

If you stare at the turbo long enough you'll find the model number on it. From memory (and my memory is shaky) it's an IHI something or other.

That's a compound turbo, not a vgt, so you can do the wastegate mod like the 3.2 and put a manual boost controller on it.. if ecu has same limits without map trickery it will limp at 22psi. Tinker away bored man

That's a 4x2 with the 4D56 engine and turbo without VGT. So boost controller is possible but only to the limit of what the ECU will allow, unless that chip of yours modifies the MAP signal. Wastegate mod is possible but not quite the same as the 4M41, IIRC.

There is some discussion on this in this thread, mostly about halfway through and scattered in amongst discussion on the 3.2.

Edit: Geek beat me to it, kind of. That's what happens when you open the thread to reply and then get sidetracked.

I doubt that this rail chip is that spectacular because my dad ran it in his L200 and not for long either, he had a remap in the end.

Off topic but dad eventually traded it in for a high spec diesel vw golf and became a victim of the emissions scandal. Haha, should've stuck with the Mitsi

There is a lot you can do with that engine, you can go to town on the compressor housing/wheel, or fit a larger one. The limiting factor is the OEM tune, which could be overcome somewhat inexpensively with a chip. Invest in an EGT gauge with an alarm function.

I have seen some big numbers on the 4x2

So there's hope for my old wheelbarrow yet Bill, I was actually thinking about whacking an egt gauge on, I have had one since I got the barrow but kids and new house have meant the ute gets the least attention although over the years it's been pampered well considering. It's funny driving around in the least powered of the Tritons in the range so I'm happy that there are ways and means of turning the old girl into a sports wheelbarrow. The sound advice from this forum is always appreciated no matter how ridiculous the questions are. Once my children are at school and both of us are working again in a couple years, I will either pamper that Triton handsomely or just buy a new(ish) mq and a 4X4 this time.

You can start with a new cartridge for the turbo, with a larger compressor wheel, and compressor housing. Any half decent turbo shop could do this for a few bucks.

Get a chip that does fuel and boost, and start tuning.

I'll look into this and over time it'll happen. There's a place where I live that specifically deal with turbos so I can go pick their brains a little.

Looking at boost controllers online, some kits come with a 'T' piece and some don't, I'll show both pics but can anyone tell me if I need the T or not?

Those are just examples of what I could buy, the fancy ones just look the same as the cheap ones just post is a months wait from China and the Australian sellers ones are 40 times the price. I did some reading and I now understand that the check valve is for a bleeding type whereas the other type is ball and spring. I'm just not sure what I need. My guess is ball and spring

Sorry had a brain fade, my bad. Was thinking about the T piece that connects into the MAP sensor vaccum line for the boost controller gauge. You do not need a T piece hooking up a manual Boost controller. Turbosmart usually sell for around $50

Thanks bud, I had already ordered one and it was without t piece. After looking at a few pootube videos, I'd lost faith in what one was correct. Man, I can't wait for the next few things that the postie is bringing
