Factory Hybrid LSD

Postby barraxt on Mon Aug 11, 2008 11:54 am

Well, my factory diff got replaced under warranty (Diff whine) on Friday and a mate and I went testing today...you little ripper.

I had it crossed up in a rock garden and like all LSDs, once one wheel becomes airborne, no drive. My mate was sitting in his Discovery and watching as I dug a little whole just testing wheel travel and then he couldn't believe it when it just drove out of the rock gully.

Now the diff fully locks when you lean on the handbrake slightly, just like a hybrid LSD is supposed to do. We tested again in a position where there is no way it should have driven out and again I just pulled on the handbrake very lightly and off she goes.

Gives the best of both worlds, particularly when towing and you cannot use the factory diff lock at speed. Now I can also lock the LSD when required.

Beautiful.

Sorry I'm not following...
Do you mean your locker was replaced by LSD?
Crossed up?
So previously your LSD didn't lock up properly?

No his diff was replaced under warranty because it was faulty it had a whine (noise).

and he is saying that applying the handbrake slightly when in a situation where you have excessive wheel spin from one rear wheel will trick the diff into applying power to the opposite wheel and you can drive out.

Crossed up means you are in a situation when you only have traction on two wheels. One front and the opposite rear wheel, which in a vehicle with no diff lock it means all you will do is spin wheels.

Hope this helps.

I find that when pressure is applied to the handbrake, the whining starts. 8-) 8-)

I used that technique in my old 2000 rodeo. Works a treat. Not so good for the hand brake cable, but got me up a few sandy creek banks and rock steps.8-) 8-) But i must say I love the factory locker 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)

Greedy, that's awesome! Thanks for clarifying the offroad speak King... you are the king.

I've heard of the handbreak trick for open diffs, but for LSD I thought the whole point was that wasn't necessary.

Jitsukablue. An LSD is a great compromise diff when using the vehicle for sand and towing on dirt, however ALL LSDs suffer the same problem. they need the tiniest amount of resistance to continue to work.

King Triton's comment is correct in that the application of resistance from the handbrake makes the LSD start to lock up again.

My previous diff would not do it at all and had a whining noise above 70km/h, so it was replaced under warranty and now works a treat.

Agreed, the lockers are nice, but I made a decision to stay with the slippery this time as it was supposed to be a good diff that locked with handbrake. Now it does....yeeha

Greedy. It depends on the amount of pressure and the location of the aforementioned pressure - the whine could be transformed into groan. It just takes practice.

as far as i know that works with the front as well if you are ever in a position where you need taction on the oposite wheel to the one thats spinning in the front just apply a bit of pressure to the foot brake and the same thing will happen, was the same thing as my old triton front and back and my mates 94' landrover discovery

Why would you want to disable the speed limiter from the locker? :-)
