Ml auto locker install

Postby Greggu on Mon Aug 07, 2017 3:08 pm

Hi guys, I did search and could not find a response regarding this. We installed a locker over the weekend and all went well it engages and disengaged when it sopposed to. Did the first test drive up through some deep wombat holes all worked well. Second test drive not so good, climbed a small loose wombat hole which loaded up the left wheel up and both wheels spun (good). Second attempt at same obstical bit more pace (like fast walking) and pop goes the left axle/cv on the wheel side of the inner cv. Haven't taken the axle out yet waiting for a replacement first, but it seems it broke just on the wheel side of the cv, axle is broken and just flops around. Have you guys with lockers experienced this as a common occurance or could c something been weakened on a previous unlocked adventure?

that sounds like a common fault when u have a locker in a cv shafted car m8
need to drive with more care and detail as the locker puts a lot of force on the axles
normally they would not be moving but locker locks (lol oviously lol) and when wheel comes down spinning it has a sudden force of impact called shock loading and that is what happens
u need a weak link in the drive train cvs are it
other wise u would be blowing up ring gears or pinions in the diff

so i would say that it has been a weak link for a while but locker has helped it on its way...

Chris

If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay us to do it?

Thanks coughy, I was thinking that as well, it must of been weakened in previous expeditions (some have been quite hard) as there was no lifting wheels just a bit over idle, about 1500rpm in first low. If we had been into it that's something I would expect. Oh well I'll put another in and see how we go.

Replaced today, not broken right at the splines. Snapped about 20mm out toward the wheel. Cv's looked and worked fine.

I have snapped the shaft on the CV a few times, same shaft as pictured, but usually further along the shaft. I have also snapped the shaft on the diff side

The shaft snapping is more of a torque/ traction break, confirms you were going slow.

the bearing case is usually caused by a sudden load.

what sized tyres (and are they mud tyres) and what is the height of the vehicle, centre of wheel to bottom of the flare, and is the vehicle a auto?

It's running 40mm of lift with 265/70/17 in mud terrain that's a manual trans.
