Excessive smoke

Postby sed8td on Wed Sep 18, 2019 7:00 am

Recently I've noticed my mn blowing a huge amount of dark smoke when I leave work in the morning.
First time it done it I pulled over as it was covering both sides of the road. I lifted the hood and found my egt sensor was loose, I tightened it and seem to have stopped.
Then done next day and sensor is tight, so I'm assuming it only does it when it's cold.
It's serviced every 7500k, once it's warmed up there's little to no smoke.
What should I be looking for?

I also realised it only does it when Im leaving work. No other time, and I'll spend my 20 minute break in my car with it idling and heater on.

Try cleaning the MAF sensor. It is just downstream from the air filter. Buy MAF sensor cleaner from Supercreep an clean as per instructions. worked for me.

I've done that.
Last night I didn't let my car idle for 20min on my break.
Started this morning, no smoke.
Must only do it if it's left idling for some time

20min of idle on a regular basis ain't really good for common rail diesels - probably a good way to culture carbon build up.
Don't let the b'strds get you down!!
