Free boost adjustment??

Postby YLD-15T on Sat Aug 08, 2009 9:18 pm

Hey everyone. My mechanic showed me years ago an easy way to adjust boost on any internal wastegate style turbo. You need to locate the rod which goes from the actuator to the turbo(on the turbo side it actually connects to the wastegate arm). You should see a threaded part of the rod which will be closest to the turbo end of the rod. There will be a clip that holds the end section of the rod onto the W/G arm. Simply take off the clip then pop the rod off the W/G arm. Then you have to loosen the lock nut on the threaded rod so you can wind the end part (which was connected to the W/G arm) towards the actuator a few turns. Now the end you poped off wont line up with the W/G arm. So now you just need to physically pull the arm till you can pop the it back onto the W/G and replace the clip and also tighten the lock nut. Now your boost should have increased. Only try this if you have a boost gauge. From memory this only works if you want to turn a the boost a little bit. I did this on my old cordia turbo when i first brought it years ago.
Not sure if anyone has tried this or if it works on the Tritons?
A search on the net should find you a diagram of this method. I have a pic on my computer but not sure how to attach it?

Speaking of paying members, you just jogged my memory and I was wondering why I hadn't been badges as platinum yet... Seems the payment wasn't processed - must sort that this week... :|

Interesting, I can't view your shed, via the clicky here or in your profile...

ummm. my tritons actuator is not connected this way. mine is a vacuum actuator? It has a hose connecting the actuator, not a bar.

Hey, Amalinze. I just double checked on my car and it definitely has the actuator style as i explained and pictured above. Maybe have another look at your car, it should be there. It kinda sits underneath the turbo a bit. The line you are thinking of maybe are just the water lines or the vacuum line that run from the actuator chamber to turbo (which is where everyone T's into for the boost controller??
Took a photo of my cars actuator. http://i583.photobucket.com/albums/ss27 ... 030018.jpg

Shortening the actuator arm increases the spring tension on the waste gate which then requires more boost before opening. it looks easy enough but its hard to re attach the arm once you shorten the rod because of the spring force its easier just getting a bleed valve fitted to the actuator

Would a boost controller be mandatory with this, like it is with nearly all other boost increase mods?

Wouldn't want to overboost?
