Is anybody in the Brisbane area considering doing this soon and interested in seeing if we can get enough numbers for a discount on fitting?

Homer, i am not sure you will save much as there is not a lot of discount in the fitting labour unlike a group buy on products.

in my opinion i would be researching for the best and most reputable innstaller in your areas. You may be able to get a group buy on the parts but in my hard learn't experience ( ), saving a couple of bucks by supplying your own parts can cost you a whole lotta grief if something goes wrong.

if they supply and fit, and it breaks, they cannot point the finger at anyone else, particularly when it is something as critical as a diff centre.

You going the rear?

No mate the front...we'll see how good those CV's are

And we can finally get a proper comparo going on front V rear.

The problem I think Snowy is finding out which ARB stores have decent installers  I think it's just Russian roulette.

Speaking of comparo's I was talking to someone with the MN who thinks the traction control is rubbish, but found out he hadn't ever turned the ASC off when 4wding.

I believe this makes it chalk and cheese and was wondering if others have been doing the same? How about the guys at the w4d action shoot?

Yeah mate I gave it plenty of thought but can't find many good reviews from people who have fitted them.

It got put in the too hard basket :?

Garth was testing the traction control and he has the DL as well. he is no idiot so i am sure he had them on or off at the right time.

Have you considered a good diff specialist? some of them would be able to do it. it doesn't have to be ARB.

i will PM you Scott's email details from here in sydney - they would know who is good or bad up there.

Auto lockers - although cheaper - don't let you turn them off when you dont want them. so i agree - go an air locker.

Thanks mate I sent Scott a message ;)

Well ARB come in at $2084 fitted - which is a good price for them I've been told.

I was also told that Total Offroad have an air locker VERY similar to the ARB ;) that would be maybe $1,600 fitted but I don't know much about them or how good the 'cough' non ARB copy is....

Any of you Outer Limits guys (you know who you are) know much about this guys lockers????

PM me if that's better...

Homer - i would try capalaba arb.

John the old guy there is a mitsu (paj) fiend and they have a good rep with competition gear.

Redlands 4wd is a few doors down, so a price check is easy.

They were great when they did the clutch on the jtop, no one else would give me a quote (import)

Yeah mate I'm not having a dig at anyone :)

Also not saying that it would make them better than a locker. But as I've been saying all along, the one guy I talked to said he didn't need to use his locker.... WHEN HE TURNED HIS ASC OFF...

I made that in capitals because I have only ever heard Tony (I think) ever mention switching off the ASC when needing to use the T/C in tough spots.

It has been mentioned many...many....many times, but every MN owner I have spoken to doesn't know about it.

Edit: OK, I found him...his user name is ahmo...search his posts, there's only 24 of them...also worth having have a read of THIS

Homer, I ran a 4WD systems front locka in my 4runner for 3 years or so before I sold it. This was an awesome locka as before I installed it I'd smashed two sets or ring and pinion gears. 3rd time spent an extra $500 and happy as after that :D

The only downside is that when in 4wd there's no way of disengaging it, the steering is a bit heavy but no biggy, it will pull you anywhere 8-) .

Check there website ;)

Thanks mate, I'll definitely have another look at that then...it was my first option because everything is so bloody expensive.

Add to that other installers have said there WILL be oil leaks and other issues down the track with an air locker.. :?

Someone call :D

Yeah played with the ASC off button and I don’t think it made much of a difference, if at all. The "Active Stability Control" is hooked up to a Yaw sensor mounted under the front of the console. It is "designed to improve the vehicle's stability by restraining its tendency to slip sideways" :? Straight from the manual that so not much use at slow speed in the bush

The manual also says to turn the ASC off if stuck. "The vehicle will then be easier to extricate" so sort of contradicts itself. Traction control is still active though.

When I was playing (testing) the other day, Ii wasn't using a lot of revs, unlike the guys with the LSD's. I was only using revs between 1500 and 1800 to see how it would crawl. Next time I will use a few more revs and see how that goes with the traction control.

So far I have worked out that I can get as far as any LSD ute using 1500 to 1800rpm when they have to use brute force and heaps of revs, throwing crap everywhere and risking breakage. Next step is to work out how best to use the TC to get even further.

I've been driving 4WD's for about 20 years and I am learning heaps at the moment. The traction control is a whole different ball game and Ii will admit, I don’t think I have got the best out of it yet.

I think the main issue with the traction control is it only has one mode, ON. If we compare it to the latest generation TC systems they have modes for snow, mud, rocks, etc, etc. I believe the TC system is calibrated for on road use so it is OK on hard surfaces but crap in mud.

When I was coming home from the Lithgow trip it was raining pretty heavily. The Bells Line of Road is pretty twisty and it had water rivulets running across the road. A couple of times the back stepped out on me as I was pushing pretty hard to get home. The Traction/Stability control had it all under control before I had time to really react. Works very well in those sort of situations

So to sum up, I'm still out on a desicion on the ability of the traction control as a 4WD enhancement. The difflock is Gold. Best money you can spend apart from tyres.
