is it worth opting for paint protection at point of sale. what is actually involved in the process, and just how covered are you from scratches etc.

Paint protection won't protect your paint from all tree scratches so if you plan on taking your truck off road DON'T get paint protection as you can't polish the scratches out yourself, and trust me you will get plenty of tree scratches. To remove scratches with paint protection the coating has to be removed from panel then polished out then reapplied, and this will need to be done by them so it could get costly.

The paint is "soft" to begin with!
Spent most of my money on booze, women, guns, utes, motorcycles, fishing & boats.

I wasted the rest!

paint protection

Ive got paint protection and i was given some polish and protector coating from the dealer so i can polish out my scratches which come out pretty easy and then reapply the protector my self and I can always buy more if i need, the car also needs to be checked buy the dealer every 12 months and if there are any problems they will fix them up free, I was given a 10 year warranty card for the protector which stands providing i use negative pH car wash (Megauirs NXT Generation) and that i keep on top of polishing out the scratches which gets checked every 12 months same as the interior. Its all done through Zupps Carmarkets with Diamond tech applications

From a brother in the spray painting trade.. it's not worth a cent. Paint applied to cars these days is much better than it used to be, they don't fade anymore etc. It's just a way for manufacturers to make money. A yearly/bi-yearly buff polish and wax will keep your paint in good condition for a long time.

paint protection

Paint/Rust/Sound/Tinting protection that is supplied by the car dealer is a rip off.
A good friend of ours is the lady (and it usually a lady) that comes up to you after you have decided to buy a new car sits you down and tries to sell you car protection packages.
She told us they have 100-150% mark up.
some of the top of the line packages cost $2500 plus so if you purchase these items they have just made an extra $1250 minimum and there goes all the haggaling with the salesman to get an extra $1500 for your trade. :(

I got it thrown in once with a new car but the fine print says you have to take it back to the dealer every 12 months for an inspection and they cahrged me $25.00 a go and i had no car for a day.
Always read the fine print.

I agree, I would never opt for paint/rust/whateverelse protection or any other con they try to push on you after you've purchased the vehicle.

Just polish the vehicle once or twice every year and you're good to go. The $1000+ price tag for these things can be use elsewhere to better effect.

Hi guys

Ditto the comments here. A mobile panel beater here in Brissie does our rust prevention- he used to do work for a large rust proofing mob and reckons his solution is at least twice as effective. From memory its a mix of sheep fat and fish oil - but I think the main benefit is he spends the best part of a day pulling off all interior skins to make sure the product ends up in every corner etc. as opposed to squirting some spray up the door weep holes and saying you've been rust proofed. It smells a bit for a week and you might find your dog licking the bottom door sills for any seepage :)

He also said paint protection is worthless and recommended Body-Fix Poly Brite polymer sealant and wax and some decent lint free buffing cloth and a bit of elbow grease. I do our little Suzuki Swift with it (the Triton will be a bit more work !) and you can definitely feel the difference on the finish

Any extras on ours are gonna be after-market, as the funds recover :)

Dylan, the lighter "bush pin stripes" will polish out but for most you'll need a machine. Find a good detailer or paint specialist that can buff them out without damaging the paint. A little polish on the door frames won't do them any harm.

Dylan - The dealer will just charge you what it costs them plus a (hefty) margin. Just take it to a good detailer or a friendly panel shop and get them to buff and polish. You can also try the mobile guys (Kwikfix, Touchup Guys etc.) I charge $150-$200 so expect something around this.

I just wash mine every couple of weeks or after a day out playing, If I cut/polished it every time I got a scratch I don't think I'd have any paint left in a few years but on my wifes old 02 silver magna & before that a black mirage I used mothers swirl mark remover which worked a treat

Gelson T57 for dark colours, Gelson T47 for light colours. Outstanding clarity and depth with excellent life and absolutely no swirl. Best with a machine. About $160 for 5 litres.
