Biggest legal and not voiding warranty tires

Postby Palmer250f on Sun May 19, 2013 6:51 pm

Hi guys I have tried the search engine to try and find my question. There was a lot of info but not a lot of new info. I have heard recently that the laws may have changed about sizing of tires and what's legal and what's not. I just want to clarify before I go buying some new rims and tires what I am supposed to be running to keep the cops, insurance and warranty happy. Ideally would love to run 285s on a 16" rim but pretty sure this isn't legal? Any info would be much appreciated as I haven't yet found my answer.
Cheers

From my limited research 265/70/16 is legal however 265/75/16 is not. I read that guys have had steering items replaced under warranty while running 285s but that would surely be case by case basis and Mitsi would be able to reject warranty claims for going considerably larger than standard. It all comes down to your appetite for risk.

Even 265s are, technically, not legal.

If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay us to do it?

Mate- love to help but you don't even tell us what state you live in.

NOT all states have adopted the code, as far as I can tell.

Also- what model triton will determine the answers you seek, as a triton with stability control (electronic safety aids) is treated differently within the guidlines and that determines what size tyres are legal.

Probably why there is so much information on the site.

be aware what might be legal, might be different to what might be covered by warranty.

State of Qld has adopted the code- 50mm larger than standard fitment tyres if the vehicle has no electronic aids.

it could be argued that 265/75/16 tyres are legal, as going by the different tyre manufacture spec sheets the tyre diameter ranges by around 10mm for each sizing.

to protect yourself- if that worried and wishing for this size- printout the spec sheet for your factory fitted tyre size (think bridgestone 245/70/16) and a sheet for 265/75/16 tyres that are within the 50mm range.

the 265/75/16 when calculated are within 5mm of being legal- i.e find a large diameter 245 tyre and a small 265 diameter tyre.

Palmer just for your info I agree with 4wd26 as I made my own enquiries with Qld Transport when I had the same question and they said you can increase by 50mm. From memory I think the standard Bridgestone's 245/70/16 on Tritons came in at 749mm overall diametre but it does seem to vary by a few mil dependant on the brand. My Cooper 265/75/16 came in at 810mm (32 inch) which may be illegal according to the original tyre sizing but I still got them and they weren't queried recently when I got pulled over by the fuzz.

Yep, same question has been running through my mind as I upgrade to LTs for a run out west.
2012 GLX with stability control etc.
National code says 50mm max, but has a section on vehicles with stability control, and it needing to be recalibrated if parameters, including tyre size change.

Since the gearing in 5th and the diff ratio are about right at 100km/hr, also did not want to go too much taller in the drive line. Low 1st isn't that low either.

So have gone for 245/75-16. Could have got 265/70-16, 31" in the old money, stock 245/70-16 are about 30".

Noticed a black Triton MN running 285/75/16 BF Goodrich AT's in a car park today, I am guessing the owner is not worried about legal issues, looked good!!
