MY13 GLX Plus - 16" alloys, whats the offset & width?

Postby AussieAnth on Mon Dec 16, 2013 2:39 pm

I picked up a MY13 GLX Plus pack. This upgrades the GLX from 16" steels to 16" alloys.

Redbook only lists the GLX as having the 16x7 steel rims. Not sure if the alloys are the same, but they're fitted with 245/70/16 H/T

1) Anyone know what the rim width & offset is of the 2013 16" alloys?

I found a lot of useful info on this thread here, but want to be sure of the specs before I go searching for a suitable 2nd set of 5 rims for muddies.
http://www.newtriton.net/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=8153

2) If I plan to fit 265/70/R16 muddies, whats the ideal/best offset that's still legal?
3) What width do the rims need to be?

Cheers

1. the alloys are 16x7 and +38 offset
2. all depends on what state you live in. Best if you check each states motor registry
3. 7" will generally carry a 265 tyre but it depends on the manufacturer so check with the tyre store

Depends on the tyre manufacturer.

Is this a legal thing or a tyre thing cause I know of plenty of us getting round with 265's on the ML alloys which are 7"

it is 285 that has trouble on a 7" rim

almost all 265 will fit 7" rims (manufacturer recommendations)

Homer runs a 275 on a 7 inch if I'm not mistaken.

In terms of width there were MNs that came standard with 7.5 inch (17s) rims so you could use that as your base when working out your width.

i was told by the tyre shop that my 265's were illegal and he would not touch the car until i showed him my rims were 7.5 and not 7 his words were u need to take the car back to who ever fit your your tyres.

and this is from a guy that i have taking all my cars too. i even did work at his house to repair his a/c unit.

can anybody prove this wrong in writing cause the info sheet he had on regulations for qld maybe wrong.

What tyres do you have?
We can then look up if it is the rims/ tyre combination he is worried about or the fact they are oversize for your state
265/75/16 are technically an illegal size in QLD on the triton nothing to do with tyre manufacturer fitting that size onto a 7" rim

265/65/17 , dont wont to go somewhere else as he does a good job. i dont have a drama as i have a 7.5 rim
but his guideline book says a 7inch rim is out of limit. for that tire if anybody can show me that its ok i will give him a copy.

There are no guidelines or rules that govern what tyre can be fitted to what rim. It is up to the manufacturer to specify the rims taking into account side wall construction, rigidity etc
.
Link to cooper tyres website with rim recommendations for different size tyres

http://www.coopertires.com.au/index.php ... &tyre_id=6

recommended size for 265/70/17 ST is 7.00 to 8.50 inches

I had a verbal convo with bob jane at lawnton (i think it was that francise) who told me the exact same thing, said 265 is to wide to fit on a 7 inch. I since got the 7.5 h3 rims and runs 265s now. Its odd indeed

I have seen the regulation booklet that the tyre centres are susposed to abide by. I'm not sure if they Are legislation or a "tyre guideline booklet" set up by the local industry

So in that respect I'm not sure what happens

If you go a bit further around Paisley drive there is a tyre mob called Big Tyre Group. He had no drama fitting 265/ 75 16 to my mj triton. I was running 16x7 sunraysia rims. Basically he said if the tyre spec allows a 7 inch rim he would fit it. Had no problems with tyres even in sand driving when they were deflated to 20 psi. Just an option

Yeah called him also. But at 450$ each for mickey thompsons i didnt even call him back....

it would be intresting to see if these are just "guidelines" or the law as stated

http://www.tyreandrim.org.au/tyre-and-rim-standards-manual.html
this would be the manual, I'm not in the tyre and rim game, so don't know the implications of not following the "standard"

It seems to be a funny document, in that it looks to be telling leglislators "govt and roads and traffic authority" what to do.....

like I have mentioned before- can you operate out of the standard and still be legal- I would hazard a guess that yes, if the tyre manufacturer regulates their tyre fitting.....

so would require from the tyre manufacturer and importer that the tyre can be fitted to a specific rim width range and meet Australian requirements.

Would be a interesting legal argument

My understanding is ML is 7" and MN is 7.5".

Either way 265's fit no problems, as CD has said I'm running 275's on 7" rim (Bridgestone 694 then 697 - both LT's) and I've run them (694's) with around 5-600kg's on the tray (and 4 fat blokes) at 12 psi and 100 kph for 80km's (including crawling over significant coffee rock), and unloaded for many, many k's at those pressures on the beach and never an issue.

I also carry 700+ KG's semi regularly on the road at up to highway speeds.

So I don't see 265's in LT being an issue on any rim?

The OP states 265/70/16 which can be fitted to a 7" rim in most cases.

Hvac has 265/65/17 which require a 7.5" rim minimum in most cases

Just to confuse it all :D

It clearly differs from brand to brand - here's a snip from the Maxxis website for the MT 764:

Buzzy at one stage was running 285/75/16 mickey T MTZ's on his OEM 16x 7 rims, which by there web site was OK at the time.
I notice that they have now pushed the rim width out to 7.5"

this might be a silly question, but were does it say on the rim what the width is? from the outside there seems to be no indication
I have read a couple of the rim/offset threads and my head now hurts :?

i have a my13 GLX with alloys running 245/70 R16

i am curious since i am thinking about using my homemade (not by me) box trailer for a upcoming big trip and want to run the same rims all round, it seems that a landcruiser 6 stud hub is what i will need to change to to get them to fit on the trailer

will it matter if i have some rims at 7" and some at 7.5"

I can't see that being a problem......

One thing to check is the width of the trailer axle as Triton +38 mm offset could make them scrape on the inside, you may need the zero offset rims or a longer trailer axle, worth checking first
