Offset, nut spacing, what else do I need to consider?

Offset, nut spacing, what else do I need to consider?

Postby AussieAnth on Tue Mar 25, 2014 8:13 pm

Im looking at a 2nd set of wheels with wider stance, and would prefer alloy over steel, although the price of steel is tempting.

I've found a set of 5 x Ford Ranger PJ XLT wheels, and I'm not sure if they will fit.

Offset is confirmed at +10 . Should be borderline within the arches on an MN, or close enough to it. Might add some flexy flare if need be.

PCD is 139.7, on 6 bolts. Same as Triton wheels.

While there is a Ford branded cap over the hub, is the size likely to be an issue? I dont believe the centre hub is weight bearing, but i understand they can be different sizes.

Any ideas?

The biggest issue is clearance at the back of the wheel for the front brake calipers. Very few wheels will fit the ML/MN Triton (even fewer fit NT/NW Pajero) because of this.

You will need hub rings to suit. These ensure that the load is transferred to the hub, as designed, rather than the studs. Obviates possible insurance issues, not to mention wheels that tend to fall off.

Legality. Will your proposed offset increase the track by more than allowed in your local jurisdiction?

The size of the Ford branded cap over the hub is unlikely to be an issue.

Finally, street cred. Ford wheels on a Triton with flexy flares = cred rating of -135.

If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay us to do it?

Ah ok so the hubs are load bearing. Fair enough.
I figured at +10 offset, there would be more space behind them than the +38 factory alloys.
I was going to ditch the Ford caps & replace with something generic.

I think Sunraysias are back on top of the list. Never hurts to ask.
Thanks

x2 what NFT5 said.

rim width is something you also need to consider - how many inches wide? 7? 8? 9? The width changes the amount of wheel protrusion outside the flares. If 0 offset and 7" wide, you have 3.5' either side of the centerline. With 9", you have 4.5" either side. that will appear as an extra 1" wider stance just from rim width.

its a balance between offset and width.

Putting other car brand wheels on our rigs make them more, or less, interesting. ;)
Each to their own when it comes to design. It's your rig at the end of the day.

Increasing width and adding flexi flares will cause significant wind drag and blow your fuel figures out the window :| , food for thought

legal has a track width increase of 50mm (25mm different offset each side)
so in the triton case +13 (38-25)

if the rims are zero and you run 32" you will get some wheel scrub on full lock, not too much be there.

Also need to be careful, some of the 16x8 rims do not fit the triton, gecko are a brand that have been posted about- but not sure of offset that didn't fit, might pay to check clearance before getting tyres fitted

It's usually the brake calipers they foul on so whack a rim on the front and check clearance at the back of the rim.
