Steering vibration after fitting new tyres

Postby BB32 on Tue Jul 22, 2014 9:26 pm

Hi,

I have just changed from Duelers to BF Goodrich A/T and when I picked my van up and took it on the motorway it had a vibration on the steering, which wasn't there before. I took it back and told them that the balancing was not correct. They re balanced all four wheels and told me that they were all in balance. When they returned from road testing the van, they told me that the Triton's often have vibration problems after tyres have been fitted and it is normal.

This doesn't sound correct to me and I hope that someone can shed some light on this matter.

Thanks.

I'd rip the wheels off, check that the mating surfaces are clean, then refit and tighten nuts in correct sequence.

I've had wheels balanced but not tightening in the correct sequence caused the wheel to be pulled slightly out of true and caused subsequent vibration.

Just observe how some tyre jockeys misused the rattle guns.

I never let them use a rattle on my triton, would rather do it the old school way :)

Are the rims steel or alloy?

A few have reported here that if you balance a steel rim on the hub you can end up with an adverse result. You can apparently get a balancing machine with fingers that go through the stud hole rather than a single spindle through the centre. The finger balancing gives you a result more likely to work on the vehicle.

Also as above the order in which you apply your nuts is important.

My rims are alloy. I watched them fit the wheel back and they didn't use a rattle gun. they even torqued the wheel nuts after.

I will check my pressures later as well. They told me they pumped them to 2.2bar, which is normally done before they fit them on the vehicle.

Seating of rims was fine but the tyre pressures were all over the place. Seems better with the pressures at 2.2 bar.

Thanks for the advice.
