Apart from being illegal they're also dangerous.

The way I look at it is if you are going to change any part of significance like suspension or brakes for instance you do it right the first time and not skimp. It could be the difference between life and death.

Hi all,

I've found some similar threads but they mostly seem to get sidetracked.
I had an MN MY10 single cab with air bags - awesome.
Just got an MN MY15 dual cab, and put a tray and canopy on then put my tools in. Don't get me wrong, I like sky views, but it'd be nice if I could see the road too. I have read all kinds of things about airbags bending dual cab's chassis, so was thinking of just putting in heavier leaves. I'm not fussed about a lift. Do I need to upgrade all round or can I just change rear springs? Anyone got recommendations?

Edit: this thread is close viewtopic.php?f=37&t=18014 but I don't want the helper springs. I've looked at ultimate and ironman but they seem to all lift it, which means also replacing the front as I understand. Should I just bite the bullet and get a full kit?

Cheers.

Talk to a suspension specialist like Ultimate. They should b able to set you up with increased capacity leaf springs that retain standard heights. You can then retain the standard front setup if you wish although they're likely to suggest at least a shock absorber upgrade to stop it feeling like a ship in a storm. ;)

If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay us to do it?

One of the springs we build for the Triton is a standard height heavy duty option. This will support the weight perfectly without lifting the rear too high. It's a popular option with tradies and fleet operators.

Obviously everything is relative to weight. If you remove the weight, the rear will sit around 30mm higher with a standard height HD Leaf Spring.

I have sent you a PM with pricing.

G'day, really enjoying this site.
I have no idea about suspension upgrades and through conversations with mates, become confused and their views somewhat biased.
We live in North West Australia, Broome and experience constant heat which l believe effects quality, type of upgrade. Eg, oil, foam, gas etc.... Can anyone direct me with clear information to make a decision.
Thanks

I'm wondering whether or not I should go for a heavy duty rear spring..

I've got an arb canopy and a 120ah battery box in the tub, but day to day that's about it..

We have a camper to tow which has a ball weight of well over 100kg though so don't want it to sag too much but at the same time as the wife's daily driver, need it to be relatively comfortable - would the back end be too stiff with a 2-400kg rated spring?

YES

how often do you tow, vs daily drive

I would be giving one of the suspension mobs a call (or even our sponsors Ultimate suspension) and asking for their opinion

there is nothing worse- in my opinion to driving a empty ute with heavy duty springs

I've spoken to two already, one said go heavy, the other suggested light + bags which I'm not keen on..

It's our only car, so it's a daily far more than its a tow tug.

Even a comfort 2" kit will provide better capacity and less sag over stock yeah?

2" comfort kit would be a good compromise
certainly less sag over stock suspension with the trailer on the back, yet still do a better job around town than factory

Defiantly recommend talking to Brendan at Ultimate.
I sent him the measurement for each wheel from wheel centre to mudguard arch, both when empty as a daily driver and also with the caravan attached and the tub loaded.
For reference as a daily drive l have a canopy and about 60kg of gear, with the caravan (2.5tonne) we carry 200kg of gear/water and have a tow ball weight of 270kg. My 2011 MN has done 120,000k including 20,000 towing the van so the stock suspension was pretty much shot.
Unloaded the ride height was 550m front and 560m rear, with the van attached and tub loaded it went to 560 front and sagged to 525 rear. Brendan recommended medium duty rear springs with new shocks/struts all round. This gave it about a 35mm lift in the back when empty.
After fitting the new suspension the ride was a bit harsher around town so i dropped the tyre pressure back to 30psi and it is pretty good around town now. It no longer rolls in the corners like a boat either :) .
With the van attached it now rides at 560 front and 560 rear and the van now tags along nice and level, not nose down as before, very happy with the new setup from Ultimate.
Live Today. Tomorrow it will cost more.

I dont see why people are so scared of airbags.
use them as load helpers, not load carriers, and all is good. Run mine for 160,000 km without a problem. Towing, outback touring and extreme 4wding. All good.
Ripped the bags out of the old MN to put in the new MN but ended up going with a sway bar rear end and cant fit them in now.
They are taking up room in the garage now :(

What are some other ways of getting a few inches or mm's of lift?

I have a 2" suspension lift, I don't wanna do body lift because all my side steps and so on will be out, I heard about strut spacers! But what can I do on the leaf side to make it equal with the front

Not sure off the top of my head, but I have old man emu suspension 2" lift all round, so I'd say around 50mm raised either end? Plus 32" tires on 16" rims.. Probably just pushing legal height?

Hi Troy and welcome to the forum.

Quick question did you try searching for any other threads that could answer your question?

There are 2 Red buttons at the top of the page one says search and the other is the forum directory that is extremely helpful in these situations.

I am sure one of the mods will lock this thread very shortly as this has been asked and answered so many times before we've lost count!

Re: Random Suspension Questions

I have a stock MN triton and I was looking into new suspension for it. I want to get 50mm raised Bilstein shocks for the front and leave the back as it is. The front is currently 50mm+ lower then the back and the front is where I want the extra height and support. Theoretically this would level out the car, give the front the much needed clearance and make the rig look tougher.

Do many people do this to level out the car or should I just go all out and buy a whole kit?
