I was sure it changed my odo also when I fitted bigger rubber,

now you have me thinking :? will have to check into that. .....wiring diagram maybe :geek:

isnt it all from the same sensor :?:

Changing to bigger rubber will affect the odo. For whatever bizarre reason the odometer accuracy is governed by stricter standards then the speedo for, as far as I can see, no apparent reason.

I believe the majority of of the inaccuracy we see in the speed is actually due to the gauge itself as my speed with standard rubber read 7% high but the OBD only showed 2%. My odo with standard rubber is out by about 0.5% to my gps.

FUEL CONSUMPTION ML TRITON 3.2

Postby dan.batto on Tue Feb 28, 2012 6:02 am

Couple of things I have found recently to effect fuel consumption
Tyre size - going from 245 60 to a 265 75 increased fuel consumption by 2lt/100
Clutch - was worn increased fuel by 1-2 lt/100

That it would! There could still b an underlying problem.

I'll check the back breaks mooons but gave it all a proper wash and had the tires off...

I have a query!

My 2006 manual was getting 620 km to the tank when I bought it in 07 with 19000 on the clock and its been the case right up until last year!

Last year after a big Gibb river road/ Cape Laveque trip (3000+ km of dirt)I can now only squeeze around 560km to the tank!

Prior, I had the software upgrades done and I also put it into the dealer just before warranty ran out after the trip to have it checked out and they said I had the most up to date upgrades done!

I have done no other mods that would affect fuel consumption!

Why have I lost 70km/tank?

Hi Viking,
that talk is a bit above my expertise (which is limited :D ) so Im not sure if I can do what you have suggested or it requires a trip to the shop!

I agree Chick, bad fuel driving across did have me worried but I used a diesel additive the whole way and pretty sure I have replaced fuel filter since!

OK guys a mate has filled me in on the blanking and catch can!

With the blanking He did mention I may have to sort some other hoses or sensors so as it doesnt mess up readings! Is this true or is it simply blanking off the egr only????

Are both blanking erg and installing catch can proven to help economy and worth doing????

He also mentioned I should pull my turbo hoses and cooler out for a good clean and degrease!

Mine had been using a fair bit more fuel than usual (roughly 2l/100k) but was also throwing the occasional engine light.

Last time I got some work done on it they replaced the scv and my fuel consumption is almost back to where it was (I also got a new clutch fitted so have been giving her a good workout instead of driving like Chicky in his blouse ;) )
I'm not so good with the advice  ... Can I interest you in a sarcastic comment???

SCV is suction control valve, controls the fuel rail pressure.

The SCV Seriously Crappy Valve is one of the flaws (in my opinion) of the ML Triton. Seems to be a lead cause of surging, cutting out, excess fuel usage, hair loss and fines from coppers for swearing in public. Beside a clogged air filter, clogged fuel filter, blocked MAP sensor vacuum line and dirty MAF sensors the SCV seems to be a good contender on OEM vehicles. However all of the above can be cleaned or replaced fairly cheaply (except SCV).

With your fuel readings don't forget to note how much fuel its using each fill as the empty indicator may be leaving 20+ litres in the tank compared to your mates 10 Litres leftover.

Already found that after you first mentioned it Viking, alot to study is an understatement!!!

It seems to me its a hit and miss as to how different motors respond to it!

My mate has a scanner that can clear fault lights but my biggest worry is it going into limp mode as I do alot of long distance fishing trips with 5m boat in toe!

Not sure its worth the trouble to muck around with it!

Now you throw SCV at me  my mate says my fuel consumption issue would be more like a faulty map sensor before the SCV???

IM hoping your mate is right a SCV I would estimate $250 (seen on ebay) upto $400. I could be wrong. I believe you only have genuine suppliers like Mitsu or VARs for Mitsi.

I did read somewhere about a code on the SCV needs to be entered into the ecu program so not a backyard job there.

First i would tackle the air filter ($40), then clean the MAF sensor (using only MAF cleaner $10), Check the MAP tube and entry point into the upper manifold is clean of soot/carbon (free) and check its connections.
I tend to disconnect the battery for a coffee or beer then reconnect and let it recheck its parameters. Put some $2 di-electric grease on the battery terminals while your at it.

Give it a week and the readout hopefully has improved expect 9.0l/100 looking at every ones figures on here (OEM only).

To check the scv U can test the rail pressure pm chase if he's still on here I remember him talking about how he tests them as he works for Mitsubishi be good if the scan guage would show fuel pressure.

i get 10l/100km 80% city 20% highway from my 07 GLS with stock tyre size, no lift, MN sized alloy tray, jackoff canopy full off tools and gear (400kg canopy + contents) conduit and a ladder on the roofracks. 81000km on the clock.

get 8.6-9 on the highway if i sit at 90km/h

11.5-12l/100km towing a 5.5m alloy boat loaded with fishing and camping gear with my canopy removed
13l/100km towing same boat with canopy still on the tray

I've got a GLX-R 2008 MY09 , 35k's, 17inch factory alloys. Basically standard. No catch can yet but EGR blank in since 30k, when I purchased the car.

I'm getting around 11l around town and around 10l out on the Hwy. 600kms out of a tank max, I believe I should be getting more.

Motor sounds extremely rattly and makes me think the tappets weren't adjusted when previous owner took it in for a 30k service.

I'll be taking it into the stealer's next week for opinion on noisy motor, fuel economy and have the manifolds checked for build up and maybe a reflash. Its still under warranty so I'll have to quiz what I'm entitled to. As I'm away from home at the moment I'm unsure if I have the manifold with the sensor in the new position.

Has anyone heard of a motor becoming noisier (like mechanical tappet noise) after the installation of EGR blank?

Cheers, Secondeye, did exactly that. cleaned air filter, mass sensor and today I pulled the intercooler and hoses out and degreased the lot!

Surprise surprise my economy has returned to over 600km/tank :D

Looking at a catchcan now as I saw how oily everything was

Doubt I will worry about egr blank as I dont want to start playing with eror codes!

Whats next to improve the old girl boys
