I did read somewhere about a code on the SCV needs to be entered into the ecu program so not a backyard job there.

First i would tackle the air filter ($40), then clean the MAF sensor (using only MAF cleaner $10), Check the MAP tube and entry point into the upper manifold is clean of soot/carbon (free) and check its connections.
I tend to disconnect the battery for a coffee or beer then reconnect and let it recheck its parameters. Put some $2 di-electric grease on the battery terminals while your at it.

Give it a week and the readout hopefully has improved expect 9.0l/100 looking at every ones figures on here (OEM only).

Hey secondeye,

Can you clean the SCV? and were is located. And same with the MAF sensor, where abouts can I find that
Cheers

Just out of curiosity, what do your distance to empty gauges say immediately after a refill. ??????????????
I do a lot of heavy towing and regularly get about 14 -15 l/100 km. :o

Distance to empty after a fill is always around 490 - 500 km for me.

550km to 600km and usually its spot on.

Am I being unrealistic with my fuel consumption ambitions?

I am getting 500-515 with my manual. Front bar, rear bar, steps, Wrangler Duratracs. I was pissed for a while as I was getting 700+ stock but figured in the grand scheme of what I have spent it would take a long time for the extra fuel cost to be up there with the cost of my major mods. I stopped worrying and started enjoying. :D :D :D

Like wise, bigger tyres, a lift and heavy extras like bullbars all add up to use more fuel..........
But I hate driving stock fourby's even if they use a bit less

I cant really advise on how to best clean the SCV as never done it myself. I have heard of some members trying but the results are not really a solution (suggesting only half fixed). Also if it breaks or gets worse you could be up for a few weeks without wheels while a replacement is shipped from japan too.

Location is right down the bottom of the motor between the EGR assembly/ Fuel Rail and Battery.
It has a fairly easy to see electrical plug with a locking tab on the inside (engine side). Careful you dont break the tab. Should come off pretty easy. From what I can see looks like 2 alum bolts requiring either 6mm or 5/16" alum key. Note ensure the vehicle is OFF and there is no pressure in the fuel line obvious reasons, chop chop or spray alot. You will need to be careful remounting the SCV or any fuel distribution component due to the extreme high pressures the Common Rail Diesels run at.

MAF is the easy one just after your air box on the 3-4 inch air inlet. Use only MAF cleaner as last I heard $600 to replace. You can also use the search and find picture stories about all of these standard maintenance procedures for Tritons.

Cheers secondeye, I ended up searching out the mass sensor last night but was still in the dark with regards to SCV till now.

I have some electrical contact cleaner at home and from what I've read it is ok to use that to clean the MAF sensor.

I'm getting surging and loss of power particulary at revs. It's it's held above 3000 for a few seconds I get a big loss in power enough to struggle to stay at 100km. This morning it lost even more power and the engine light come on, I lost so much power I had to pull over on the motorway turn the car off for a few seconds and go again this happened twice in 3 hours. And the engine light didn't come off. It's just had it's major service (90k) at eagers mits and they replaced the manifold so I don't think it's carbon build up? I have a CR Power chip (quite a cheapy) it's turned up to the second highest setting...any ideas on what this could be?

First of all disconnect the chip to eliminate that.
Where does the chip plug into? It may have a damaged pin on one of the plugs.
If you can get hold of a scan gauge (or similar) you can read what code is causing the engine light.

Into the back of the rail. I'll disconnect it this arvo when I finish work and see if that's the problem. It may have a a damaged plug as it was bitch to plug in and I had to really use some elbow grease to get it on. Are most of them quite a universal plug that I could pick up from a repco or similar?
