Diesel LPG

Postby Barney2803 on Sun Sep 23, 2012 9:14 pm

Hi guys,

I have a diesel/LPG system on my ML GLXR triton and its simply awesome. There's more power than you can poke a stick at, and the whinging and whining on here about turbo lag just makes me confused as mine has such tiny lag at the lights it's not funny. I do have to be very careful I don't leave rubber on the road when I take off from the lights too. I don't drive it likes it stolen but I also don't nanny it either.

So my question is: how many of you blokes have the Diesel/LPG system or have experience with this conversion?

And the sound of the engine sucking air through the snorkel is only beaten by my 6.6L ski boat!:)

Cool. Fill in all details, How much did it cost? What l/100km are you getting and have you had it dyno'd ? How big is the lpg tank? Did you get the gov rebates? Are you running a 3in exhaust too?

It costs about $4500 for the lpg unit. Its not a "conversion" as such but an additional unit.

Theres quite a good writeup in the current caravan/camper magazine by the 4WD Action mob which explains the system really well.

The current rebate is apparently a pathetic $1000 which says volumes about the governments supposed commitment to the environment. ;(

Anyway, my unit was on the truck when I bought it, but was put on from almost new. I haven't had it dyno'd but I'm desperate to do it. It's the $300 price tag which is causing me to put it off.

I get 11L/100km of diesel and 2L/100km of LPG and half of that driving is 100kmh on open country roads and the rest is 40-60kmh stop/start around town. If I did 80kmh instead I'd reduce the fuel usage obviously and also the truck has a lot on it, like: 32" A/T's, bull bar, winch, lights, lights, lights, aerials, high canopy, towbar, lift etc etc so it's not stock at all.

I tow a inboard ski boat with tandem trailer weighing close to 2tonne and its done it with ease so far.

Compared to a $1000 "chip" it is heaps more expensive but the 10-20% power increase potentially gained from a chip i dont think comes close to this unit and theres no issues of tuning the engine to levels of power not recommended by the manufacturer.

I am just after others experiences with this setup.

Sorry I forgot, I'm running a standard exhaust. A 3" or at least some minor modification to the exhaust would make it better again.

Hi Barney,

Was doing some research on Diesel/LPG systems and came across your post.

I assume when you say 2L/100km that's in addition to the 11L/100km of the diesel..? From my limited knowledge I believe the gas is used like an additive to more effectively burn the injected diesel. Similar to the way an oxy-acetylene torch uses the oxygen to enhance the flame. Is this your understanding of how it works..?

Who's the manufatcurer of the system..?

Also I noticed in another post you were selling, can I ask what the reasons are for selling...?

Cheers

Hi there.

Yes it uses 11l of diesel and 2L of LPG per 100km. It's different to a typical dual fuel system and yes you're correct it simply makes the fuel spark/ignite more effectively, giving loads more power and torque.

I'm selling it due to a change in career. I'm at the top of my field now but changing career means a start at the bottom and a 50% cut in my current pay.

It really is an amazing truck and I'm very sad to see it go after such a shirt time of ownership. In fact, I bought a 19ft caravan in Melbourne last year and of course drove over and picked it up. I literally connected it up, and set the cruise at 110kmh and drove home and it did it with no dramas at all, even up all the massive hills west of Melbourne.

Does that answer your questions?

Did you want to come look at it? Or any more info?

Thanks for the reply Barney, certainly answers my questions.

Mate great looking truck and I like the extras you have on it. I've currently got a couple of options and I'm just in the middle of sorting some finances, if everything works out I may be in touch (if it's still for sale). I'm an ex northern suburbs lad so I'm down that way a bit.

Cheers

Hey chambo,

Let me know if you're interested.

They are supposed to expire after 30 days. I found your ad sitting there from 26 July not approved/ Not sure how that happened as I generally approve everything approve-able each night. At a guess I'd say that the mods who saw it might have read it on tapatalk (where it just looks like any other thread) and then it didn't show up as an unread thread when we looked at it on a PC. It may still have been visible to you since you posted it but not to anyone else since it hadn't been approved. Usually when it is approved you should get a message saying that so if there is a next time it might be worth a PM to follow-up - feel free to PM me about it.
