Sticking throttle cable ...

Postby Quinny on Mon Jan 28, 2013 3:05 pm

Going out on a limb here ... new thread from Quinny  ... happy to be smacked over the nose with a rolled up newspaper if this has been done before ... (isn't it funny everyone is petrified to start a new thread around here  )

Jumped in ute this morning ... got about 100m down the road and ... the throttle peddle was stuck ... could not press the peddle - press peddle = forward motion - not happening ...

Pulled off to the side of the road ... turned engine off ... smacked said peddle with hand - it freed up and was not an issue after that - drove an hour and a half ... until ...

Jumped in the ute again this afternoon ... Same thing ... popped the bonnet and checked the play & travel in the wire on the throttle cable ... (yes it's a real wire in the 07 ...) seemed fine ...

Poor old girl has been sitting out in all this rain we've been having ... but all is dry under the bonnet ...

Hmmm ... Obviously a mechanical issue but ... Strange ...

Someone taller than 5'3" has driven the car last and put the seat back? :P

Sounds like a CRC job is required.

Cable throttle in 07 mod :?: mine is ML 9/06 mod and it's "drive by wire" electronic type and I have issues with the slow reduction in revs when cold (winter time) no probs in this 48deg ffffffn heat :(

Well, there you go. Cable operated is better. A drop of oil and she's as good as new. 8-)

Yet another in the seemingly never-ending litany problems with these under powered old school petrol driven pretenders. :P :P

Only joshing mate, and mostly for Chris' and Homer's benefits.     Last I heard there were only a couple of cable throttles left around the joint.

No.. actually it's made of Unobtainium ... It's weight is greater than it's mass ... and therefore ... the control does not wait for any computer to figure out what to do ... press peddle ... put fuel in engine ... seems to work ... has done for years

Run into this a fair bit in the motorbike with the throttle cable. It can be either one of two issues.

First one could be that it's dirty and gummed up a little. You can get these cable oilers from bike shops than enable super easy cleaning.

Use brake cleaner and spray down the casing then flush with silicon spray. WD40 and oils just attract dirt and dust which makes the situation worse.

The other cause can be one broken strand that kinks up and snags on the inside of the spiral casing. This ones harder to diagnose though they tend to let go at a bend. Your best off taking the cable off to inspect.

You don't really want to mess around with a sticky throttle.
