Broken air box....fix

Postby viking shippy on Sat Sep 28, 2013 9:04 am

..the other day whilst mucking about in a freshwater lagoon..
the induduction noise changed when I was about to go for another dunking
I pulled the bonnet and I discovered the air box had disintegrated...
So I put some plans together for this not to happen again..
I did this last nite.. all good.. I think as you will a agree this fix is better than ome..

I think with the way that the snorkel does away with the 4th mount that their is a lot of stress Put on the rear mounts of the box that eventually broke the back of the box....... I don't think it was a back fire as some have suggested as the box usually breaks between the air filter and turbo which is not the case here..P.s the water drain isn't blocked I just haven't cleared out the plasticine from the hole and replaced the valve in that shot..

Just bumping this to see if anyone has any comments or ideas as to how or why this happens and how common is this failure..

I noticed that you mention only having 3 clamps. My safari install still allows all 4 factory mounting clamps to work.

Wonder if something has happened to the install, did you do yourself, and why only 3 clamps?

Broken air box....fix

Postby mattz on Sun Sep 29, 2013 2:57 pm

Your fix looks very good. 8-)

I'd be worried that the fibre glass would make it to rigid and might be prone to break again.
I know the mounts are rubber and have some give in them but it broke the plastic with the same mounts........Just my thoughts on it.

This is the first one I've heard of breaking......hopefully it's a one off.
Time will tell. ;)
Is this your reflection in the pic? Or is your triton haunted.

All in all, it's a good job on the repair G.

Let's just hope that this sort of thing is not going to raise it's ugly head with others.

BTW, my air box only has three mounting bolts..................as well.

Hi 26..
Wonder if something has happened to the install, did you do yourself, and why only 3 clamps?
as you can see in this pic there is only 3 mounts Click to view larger picture
The fourth before the safari install was used to support the intake pipe...i cut it off..I didn't do anything with the third mount I put it on the to do list I think now at my peril...

You mean the reflection on the offending part ..Nah I think it looks a little like Jesus...
If you study my pictures the mounts feet have 4mm of glass on them now....the whole bottom of the air box is bullet proof...the only give is in the rubber mounts were it should be ...the black plastic box parts should not have any twist or give in them ..from an engineering point of view ... I think they are a little on the thin side...they should be strong...the rubber feet are to take away some vibration from the engine..transferred from the turbo intake pipe and the body itself..to protect the maf sensor from damage...

Didn't drop it when you had it out for the snorkel install?? It may have had a slight crack/ weak spot in it and may have contributed to the blowout?? Any way I think it won't be a drama for ya any more ...
