Smoking

Hi All

No, not me but the Triton.
Started right after I got the 45,000 km service done in Hervey Bay.
I get worried when they say that they have initiated another injector learning procedure.
Actually it first showed it's ugly head as hesitation when cold and with little throttle.
Seemed to go with more throttle.
As I am towing a 2650kg van around the country, and have a Scangauge installed, I have been
watching fuel consumption. (Note that I have Gas over Diesel).

Fuel consumption went up and down like a yoyo. From 12 to 17 l/100k
Then I started seeing smoke in the rear vision and got worried.
The smoking and fuel consumption changes are spasmodic. One moment it's clear, and the next I get a call
on the radio about the smoke that is pouring out.
Pulled into a very helpful Mitsubishi dealer in Kingaroy and he pulled a hose off the inlet manifold
and stuck a thin long pin in to see if the manifold was carbon choked. Concluded that it was fairly clean.

They couldn't book me in for at least a week, so decided to keep traveling towards Wagga where the vehicle was purchased (Thomas Bros), and have booked it in for Thursday next week.

Reading this forum and trying to make sense of what is happening hasn't given me any clues.
But did read somewhere that Injectors are not covered by warranty.(IS THAT TRUE) :x :x
Are they not part of the drive chain ??

Has anyone else heard or experienced these symptoms, and what was the cure ?
I want to be prepared for whatever wool they will try to pull over my eyes.

Regards

Injectors are covered by the same warranty as the rest of the engine. The problem with them is that they can sustain damage through fuel contaminants and that wouldn't be covered by warranty because it wasn't a defect with them.

Sounds like a suction control valve to me too.
If you're travelling down the freeway for 10 mins or so at 100k/hr and then put your foot down. Does it bellow smoke and won't do it it again for another 10 mins or so?
I think you'll be fine with the warranty unless the gas has caused damage.

Hi All

That would be admitting that their fuel filter isn't good enough.

As soon as I put my foot down, it will bellow smoke for a few seconds and then either the smoke lessens
(cause I cant see it) or it disappears.

I think you'll be fine with the warranty unless the gas has caused damage.

The consensus of opinion from all concerned is that the gas creates a cleaner combustion
and thus should prevent a lot of the usual problems. Like the Exhaust gas recycling.
If you are recycling a cleaner exhaust, I guess the inlet manifold should stay cleaner.

Many thanks for the replies, will fill you in when the job is done.

Try tweaking the maf sensor pins to give better contact, maybe they got disturbed when they checked your air filter

Hi All

Got the vehicle checked out by Thomas Bros in Wagga, and they found that the Exhaust Gas Recycling valve
was faulty. It showed signs of scraping where it was sticking.

Very good service, drove us to town after we dropped vehicle off, and offered to pick us up when it was ready.
No charge and a good description of what and how they did.

Havent done any Km's yet, but even on the short drive back to the caravan park, the economy
already read 6 Litres / 100km.

Thanks for your input, and suggestions.
