Promised I would add this Hotline Fix detail to this thread - relates to 2011 MN GLX-R manual diesel - the problem was that we couldn't always get from 4th into 3rd and 2nd was starting to go the same.

Have the invoice still if anyone needs more info about what was actually replaced

Just been reading this thread and had the turbo waste gate vacuum hose problem while towing the caravan uphill at Moonbi just out of Tamworth. Fortunately the only mechanic still in captivity on the last afternoon before Christmas in Armidale knew what the problem was immediately. If the hose was put on correctly in the first place it wouldn't happen, however as it is placed strategically near the oil filter so some ham fisted mechanic can easily dislodge it enough to loosen it while changing said filter, it is a fairly common problem. Why they don't reroute the hose or put a clip on in the first place is anybody's guess.
When I mentioned it at my 30k service the bloke at Wangaratta Mits said he hadn't heard of the problem, maybe because of the flat country thereabouts, but they put a clip on as requested and no probs since. Capped price servicing, friendly and no probs so far with them

Had an interesting experience with the Wangaratta dealer while getting a 30k service. Had noticed that the front flare on drivers side had broken away from the body of ute and asked them to fix it. No problem says service bloke. BUT when I picked it up the job hadn't been done. He informed me among other things that they had to get permission from Bendigo Mits where I bought it as they had fitted the bullbar incorrectly and MMA wouldn't pay for it, Bendigo would. Initially Bendigo refused because it was out of warranty????? The truck was just over one year old at the time they refused, but fortunately the bloke at Wang got up them and told them I had informed them of the problem when I had booked the truck in a few weeks prior. Job got done ok, but the question is - if you get a "factory" bullbar, canopy etc fitted at the time of new purchase, surely it is covered by the factory warranty, or is it?

Not when it's a fitting error. If it was a design issue with bar itself maybe. If Mitsubishi had to warrant every bit of dodgy work anyone did fitting oem parts we'd be paying twice as much up front.

I should clarify dealer fitted. Factory fit would be different but bar work is done here.

Hey guys, this is really good info for new car buyers.

Can I clarify what is meant by 'surging'?

I've just bought a new triton diesel and gear changes are a bit funny. Once you push the clutch in the engine picks up about 500 rpm or so. It's really difficult to prevent it from happening. Is this what is meant by surging?

Pickup is REALLY delayed as well. Seems the turbo takes a while to kick in. Is there a fix for this? I seem to recall reading about software upgrades?

The only other gripe is that the gear box is a bit clunky and if you are at low speed in 1st gear it can 'kangaroo hop' a little and you can feel a jolt through the drive train. Any ideas or comments on this?

I have read to change the gear box oil to help smooth things out.

Coming up to the first service so i'm keen to have as much ammo as possible for the dealer to fix.

Cheers

The delayed pickup you're talking about sounds like turbo lag. A sprint booster and/or chip might alleviate that a bit.

The engine speeding up on clutching in sounds like a flare which I've heard described a few times. Supposedly a 'feature'.

The surging is where you're driving along minding your own business on a steady throttle and the engine sort of pulses a bit, a bit like your kangaroo hops but smoother and at much higher speeds.

Haha 'feature' nice...

Yeh they are not major issues, just annoying. I always thought turbo lag referred to how slowly the RPM dropped while changing gears but either way similar issue.

I will discuss with Service guys and see what they think.

The Triton engine is quite different to my 3L Ford Ranger. It is quite a bit quicker on take off (can even spin wheels) but the Triton makes up for it in a lot of other ways.

Turbo lag is the time it takes for the exhaust gasses to spool the turbo enough to make boost. No easy fix for that. MN's also get quite a bit of a delay from the drive by / fly by wire throttle. As mentioned above, a sprint booster or throttle controller like S-Drive makes a huge difference there and I high recommend fitting one.

Hey Dano, that 'Flare feature' mentioned by CD must be there to assist us new fangled modern day Triton owners with the now long forgotten, old time trucker's, crash-gearbox driving era, gears changing skill, that they used to refer to as 'double de-clutching'...!

From what I read on some of these posts about the problems being encountered with reliable operation of the syncros and gears selection on the manual Triton boxes, maybe MMAL wants to 'encourage' us all, to revive the long forgotten art, of double clutching again...?? :D

With factory fitted parts it should be under new car warranty but if installed by the dealer then normally it's only parts warranty 12months/20,000kms

Does this mean they'll fit the thermo fan they were supposed to leave the factory with?

Thermofan unlikely since that's aircon and we're talking engine cooling.

From the vague stuff posted on facebook last night it didn't sound like a proper recall. Rather that they've finally narrowed down the date range for suspect engine blocks and are calling owners in to suss out which engines have the problems. The thing last night talked of testing coolant for signs of contamination or something like that. Blow by?

I checked the recalls site last night and nothing there at present. Also signed up for daily email alerts for Mitsy related recalls so I shouldn't be able to miss it if it were to actually happen.

Without trying to take it off topic, what sort of temps are they classing as overheating do you think? From what I read on here most people including myself are getting between 85-92 degree water temps which I thought was ok for a diesel?
