Whining/screeching noise from front end

Postby 1tuff_triton on Tue Jan 15, 2013 4:16 am

This morning driving to work a loud whining/screeching noise started coming from the front end. It starts and goes for a few minutes then stops. It only did it a couple of times but was bloody loud. Sounded like it was coming from the front left. Any ideas to what it could be? Thanks in advance

I had that from brake pads. Started out intermittent more often while or after cornering but slowly became constant.

Jack the car up and check your wheel bearings for movement.....

Long shot, but possible. Please be someone else that has killed one.

Mine was really quiet, initially, but by the end did make some noise when going around corners.

Stop pissing the wife off and she will keep quiet. lol

Is it while you are braking or accelerating or is it just while you are cruising. Maybe fan belt could be getting worn, maybe if you hear it again turn off the air con and see if that makes a difference. Just trying to eliminate possibilities.

So it's happening whilst moving. Didn't change when Corning or braking. Tried the air con on and off but didn't make a difference.

I think it could be the radiator fan.the noise starts when the engine gets upto temp but in saying that when I slow and come to a stop the noise slows with me and stops when I Do

Put it in neutral when stationary and hold the revs at about 2,500 rpm & see if it appears

It only kicks on with acceleration. Will play with it in neutral later tonight and see

Some possibilities:

Air conditioner clutch (slipping or stuffed bearing)

Idler pulley bearing

Loose fan belt

Alternator bearings

Water pump bearing

A few things there that can make the noise you describe.

Well the mrs came out for a drive and she reckons the noise sounds like a bad flute player and she thinks the noise sounds like a vibration. It only comes on with acceleration still just on and off.

All good advice above.

Also check around your tailshaft for a stick or bit of wire caught up and rubbing on it.
