Diff oils? also stiff clutch after water crossing

Postby Rienoh on Sat Jun 15, 2013 6:33 pm

Hey,

Ive been searching for an hour now so I hope im not doubling up.

Ive got an 09 Ml 3.2 (GLX) and just got back from the Cape

It seems that I cannot fit diff breathers due to the just being a push in job?

Either way I went without them and am going to do all the oils on the 75000 which is now due.

What oils are people using? (link to a thread if ive doubled up is fine)

Also after a few water crossings my clutch was really stiff for a fair while, anyone know why or how I can prevent this?

Thanks guys

U can modify that plastic push in breather and fit the longer breather hose to it. Myself and a few other have done it. Also snoozy and deanoh69 had stiff clutches after a water crossing on the last trip to the high country. I think once it all dried out it went back to normal. U may just wanna confirm with them on that issue. But as long as u didnt change gears during the crossing I think ull be fine.
Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Most of the MLs had a breather already and it was the MNs that had the push in thing - on the rear diff anyway.

The clutch thing is pretty common, I reckon I've seen that posted about a few times before.

Your owners manual tells you the grades of oils to use. When I had to do mine I wasn't exactly spoilt for choice. I think I went with mostly castrol products from memory. Depends what shops you have near you and what they stock, and then whether you're prepared to pay a bit extra for some sort of premium product.

A how to on finding your own way - search me.

The two threads I wish people would use more: thing 1 and thing 2.

yeh, mine was quite firm & came on suddenly about an hour after the river crossing :? . It came good over the next couple of days & is back to normal now.
I never depress the clutch when doing water crossings, that could be very bad

I fitted breathers to rear diff & g/box, transfer case. front diff already has breather high up on the firewall. check my build thread for details pg 4 & 6 has pics :geek:

Yep, the clutch is a pretty common issue after water crossings.

Mine (all 3 thus far) have all done it.
