changing oils

Postby 08glxr on Wed Mar 09, 2016 10:14 pm

Hi peoples
I have an 08 ml glxr petrol and want to change all oils.
Front and rear diff oil type/brand?
Transfer case oil type/brand?
Auto trans oil type/brand?
Recommendations greatly appreciated

Amazing how quick the major oil changes come around.

I've been using the recommended Nylon products in my diesel ml since the first change. Especially noticeable was the improvement in the 'smoothness' in the gearbox and transfer.

Re autos, I've use the semi synth fluid in my son's jack and then xj jeep and both felt better for it.

Re petrol engines, our Suzuki's and previous units have all run well with nylon oils.

Ultimately if you can afford it, a brand name synthetic recommended for your particular vehicle should be fine.

Just an aside, how's your ml been going, how many kms? My son is in the market for a preowned Triton. I'd prefer him to get a late ml over a mn.

because how much do you want to spend on Oil.

08glxr, the only thing you have to worry about is the engine oil. Don't put a 20W-50 in it if you want it to perform. 10W-40 or 15W-40 is a good starting point and see whether the top end and lifters rattle on a cold start. Valvoline have some good long chain co-polymer additives in their oils that will help to stop that.

Otherwise, any name brand that meets the various specs, which are in your handbook, or on most oil company web sites.

" 08 ml glxr petrol " Will that be a LSD rear diff? Hence LSD type diff oil.

Only one thing you can be sure of - if you put the stuff in you at least know what's going in there.

With all the dodgy things I've experienced and observed at dealers over the years, DIY is worth persuing.

I 100% agree with RHKTriton but yeh I think if you stick with good brand names you should be all sweet.

I have a diesel MN and I only put CASTROL EDGE 5W-30 A3/B4 but the best thing as I said is to choose a good brand and go to oil selector :geek:

I've got a duel fuel Jack sitting in the drive, leaky head gasket. I reckon they are a totally underrated unit, heaps of interior space, goes (went) well on gas and good ride.

Ultimately any of our current 'brand' oils are a quantum leap ahead of like from 20yrs ago. You really don't see any wear these days, when the lubrication is functioning correctly. Metallurgy obviously has likewise improved over time. This then leaves heat and dirt contamination as your bigger enemies.

Find in an auto box I use a well known brand synthetic oil, usually castorl or penrite.
I do drop the ol every year or 20,000k. Usually only get half the oil out, but doing it every year for a few years does make a difference.
Nice quick smooth changes.
Have a look at the colour. Is it sharp bright red, or a bit dark and used?
