Can GL-3 oil be replaced with GL-4 ?

Postby jgoosen on Wed Oct 28, 2009 11:10 pm

My user manuals say's SAE 75W-85W API GL-3 in the Gearbox
Transfer case SAE 75W-85W API GL-4

I am struggling to get hold of Gl-3  Can I just use GL-4 instead ?

Hey goos,

I wouldn't, as there's no sychro gear in the xfer box. gl3 and 4 have different characteristics when it comes to metal wear an all that. there are some exotic metals on synchro gears and shims.

GL3 is quite common, castrol has it avaialble. quite dear, but worth it...

enjoy!

The manual say's the Transfer Case GL4 , Gearbox Gl-3.

O well I guess now I have to go drain the Gl-4 out of the gearbox .

Penrite technical support only recommend one of their gear oils for the ML manual box.
Sin Manual Trans SAE 75W/85 GL4 also the one for many motorcycle boxes and high performance Skylines.
GL3 oils are rare these days and you have to wonder what Mitsubishi have used in these boxes to warrant that low a grade of lubricant for it's lack of corrosive contents you would have to assume?
Penrite have assured me the above oil wont cause corrosion and I'm willing to give it a go after looking at the dirty crap in my box after just 6,000km along with the 'clutch rollover' gearbox noise. $33 for the 2.5L which is a good price.

Just got back from Mitsubishi they are using GL4 oil that is backwards compatible

Seems like I just waisted 80aud paying them to change it again

It's an easy one to change, 10 minutes tops.
They make a big deal about not using 'commercial oil' in the manual transmission but did you find out what they actually put in yours, apart from GL4 that's like a GL3?????? :? :?
Mine had Castrol GL5 for a couple of days, then Penrite gear 80 something GL4 and today got the stuff mentioned above.
Must say it's now shifting perfectly even cold, no rumble in neutral when cold and no 'clutch rollover' noise[so far]
3 oil changes with only 7,000km on the clock when it's not due until 75,000km I think it is for the 4x2?

My vote and recommendation is for Penrite Sin Manual Trans SAE 75W/85 GL4
;) :)
