How to service the Auto Transmission

Postby borngeek on Tue Nov 09, 2010 9:59 am

I have searched and no dice so as I embark on this mission myself (as I dont trust a dealer to do it properly) I have captured the instructions from the service manual to ensure I do it properly...

Two things I dont have is:
a. "a A/T fluid changer" WTF :?
b. a MUT3 to see when the auto is at operating temp.. Figure a 10min drive is operating temp anyway  looking for the PID to install the temp on my phone OBDII anyway ;)

The rest is semi straight forward... bit of a process involved but nothing too crazy 8-)

Easy as... I hope  OR everyone shout at me and say dont do it!! ??

Was going to stop by dealer and get proper rated oil but seeing the warranty isnt worth the paper its printed on should I use something else? I have had 2 overheat A/T events..... and atm the TC shaking a little as it locks up but that may be related to the rediculous tune I am running on my chip... and the fact I drive like a maniac?

is best to flush all the oil out by using a machine to drain and fill at the same time, auto will hold about 8 litres of fluid all up, drain it from the plug and you will onyl get about 4 litres out, with the machine you may use 12-15 litres to get it all out. By far the best way to do it.

cheers

OK two saying dont do it... (two that contribute and know better than me for sure)

it doesnt seem fair that i cant do this myself :(

//lee-thal: in the instructions they tell u to drain the cooler to get the whole 8 litres after starting it so they taking you thru 'the long way'... Really I am pretty confident doing what it says... does the machine really make a diff if I follow everything to a T???

//MAD: I am going to speak to a auto specialist in future (with snowie) to adjust things in the box but prefer to try servicing myself, if I am being realistic...?

//have no issue paying someone but if I can realistically do this myself I would prefer to... Until I upgrade the cooler I will continue to get high A/T temps when towing and on sand when being a rev head... Rather service the oil every time I cause this issue and upgrade once snowie pulls digits and we get onto it.. I dont back off if the light comes on  (and BTW the light doesn't go off until you restart the car)

Thanks for the feedback too :D

The difference in the machine is that it increases the pressure in the lines and forces out all old oil and deposits, it is amazing to see the difference after using it.

Snow I have no idea as I am still looking. I know there is a mob in melbourne that specialise in auto trans mods but no good to us. I would still like to add a bigger external cooler.

We have always used E.K.R Transmissions in Minto. They are a bit far out for some members but a good starting point. I recommend talking with them first to get a good idea on what you need. Servicing isn't too bad and will usually cost around the $300 mark for a Triton.

E.K.R. Transmissions

I strongly recommend fitting an aftermarket transmission cooler. They make an incredible difference and are cheap insurance. While your working around the transmission, you should also look at fitting longer breathers. Water is the worst thing for an automatic transmission and the only way to fix water damage is a full rebuild.

If I was going to an auto tranny specialist I would have an aftermarket cooler ready for them to fit too.

It's been a problem with Paj's and the Triton in long hard soft sand slogs and would be good to have solved.

Make sure after you have one fitted that whenever it is serviced you personally check the fluid level.
I had one on a Falcon once and it started slipping...turns out they just put in the recommended amount of oil without actually checking.

On the falcon you had to sit at idle with the brakes on - reverse - neutral - drive - repeat and then check the level while running in neutral...
I hate to advocate drugs, sex, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they’ve always worked for me.

Good point Homer. Each vehicle has a set procedure for checking and refilling automatic transmission fluid. For example some of the Ford workshop manuals even specify that the vehicle has to be driven for 24km to ensure the transmission is at its normal operating temperature (NOT). Also keep in mind that adding an automatic transmission cooler does slightly increase the fluid capacity so don't just go off the manual ;)

geek if you really wanna do it your self you could just take the drain plug out of the auto and it will take approx 4 lts of sp3 oil it has to be sp3 or the bands in the auto will swell up. 35 mins of driving and the auto will be at temp...

That should suffice for what you want out of it until you get the work done you want!
No longer a Mitsubishi technician, just a plain old boring mechanic with Mitsubishi training...

2005 Toyota Prado gxl, Lifted, Bar, Lights, Tyres etc etc...

Triton still on the waiting list.....

Thanks chaser, that is pretty much what I have had done (but wasting a lot of oil to get it fresh).
Someone asked me which type of oil I have used but cannot find the post or pm :?

anyway the recommended by mits is a Castrol product code: TQM-ST
Here is data sheet from Castrol.

I will also tell you all it is expensive stuff. $20 odd a LITRE

//Hope this finds whoever it was that asked me
