I can't believe he wants to trim the mudflaps to reduce drag, I don't think it will make much difference when you're driving a brick on wheels.
Driving my 850kg Spitfire from Melb to Sydney I only got 8.8L/100.

You think it's bad now. The tray will make it worse. My steel tray drops about 50-70km off the range, even when empty. Heaps heavier than the tin foil tub and more drag. Still well worth it though.

"He" IS disappointed with the fact that this is the first EVER vehicle "He" has ever owned (out of over 100 different cars in 50 odd years) that gets WORSE fuel economy on the highway than around town. Even "His" old Rangie was much better HW than around town. At 1900 odd KG kerb weight, with a modern TDCR diesel, YES, I expect it to be at least as economical as MMAL claims. Ask some of the others here, I dont " Have a lend" as you put it, I just say it like it is. Maybe your Prius weighs 2.5T, but my Triton weighs 1.9T and SHOULD be better on the highway than around town.

Perhaps you should stick to the speed limit, your fuel economy might improve somewhat.
You might be surprised just how much air the factory mudflaps DO catch when driving at speed. Combined with no tonneau cover to spill the airflow off the roof over the parachute of a tailgate, it can add significant drag at speeds above 80 km/h. With the most aerodynamic frontal area in the Japanese pick-up range, a " brick" isnt an accurate description. My 20 yo Lancer 1.6 auto ( I kept it to teach my step-daughter to learn to drive in) gets the same economy around town as the Triton, but dips into the LOW 7's on the highway! (38L average fill, 450 - 480 around town, 550 - 580 on highway).

Nope, my tray is lighter than the factory tub by 35 kg, so I dont expect a weight penalty to interfere with the current fuel consumption figures. I deliberately made it narrower to be the same width as the front flares and with minimal stick-out into the airflow, and shorter (1400 long) to get rid of the rear arse dragging overhang of the factory tub to keep the load centre closer in to the rear axle centreline.

Compared to some of you guys, I AM glad of what I get. The point I am trying to make is that its WORSE on the highway, when it SHOULD be BETTER!

Its a combination of the two, light steel frame with alloy chequer plate floor. Its designed to be multi fuctional, light and easy on the vehicle.

Curious as to why you think it should be better on the highway when as you put it "I sit on the speed limit".

Pretty common knowledge that the highway figures calculated under the ADR are based on simulations on the test bed under controlled conditions. Keep in mind these are ADR figures, not Mitsubishi's.

Your ute operates in the real world, and higher revs equals more fuel. Don't like the consumption then drop revs by going slower. Sit on the speed limit and pay the price (which in your case is probably 50c per 100km )

I gave up looking at the economy numbers ages ago. Just keep pumping them dinosaurs in when she needs it and enjoy the roads less traveled!

So where did I say I didnt like sitting on 100? All I said was, I was disappointed the Triton did WORSE on the highway than around town. I sit on the highway speed limit (100 or 110 as required) and thats it. I have no intentions of giving away any more of my hard earned to the govt that they already gouge out of me, so I drive to the limits set. This is the first vehicle I've ever owned that cant get better economy on the open road, ok? Would you like it repeated in Chinese, or German?
I guess if I'm getting 800 + kms around town from a tankful and 750 or so on the highway compared to 500 or less, I must be doing something right, huh?

It appears I've found the highway economy problem............. I think my tailgate is acting like a parachute. I've done 2 trips to Melb in 3 days, simmilar weather and times of day, 1 trip with tailgate up (36 ltrs used for 392 kms travelled) and the other tailgate down (30.6L used for 389 kms). Same speeds, same load, and almost identical route. Only a couple of degrees different in weather and the wind almost the same direction. The short high tub on the DC MN appears to act like a wind catcher as the air spills off the down sloping roof. A long tub (single cab) would allow the air to roll over inside the tub area and spill over the tailgate without as much resistance. I'll have to finish the tray and get it on, that might prove or disprove my theory a bit better. Last fill was 873 km for 71.2L, no highway. Am I doing something wrong?

I've seen that episode. It only works when its a longish bed and the cab has a square back. The sloping roof and short tub dont give the air bubble time to fully form and some of the airflow catches the top edge of the tailgate.
