Miss Daisy's Development

Postby fridgie on Sun Oct 31, 2010 10:47 am

After the last trip to Landcruiser with the amount of dust I watched Kwyjibo drive through ;) I have just placed my order for a uni filter and prefilter  which means should have them for the next Landcruiser trip :D :D

Now all I have to do is wait for them to come in

^^^ well hosed out the fins on the intercooler/AC/radiator on thursday before i put on my new joiner bash plate from baysie's yp to the xrox to seal the whole area up... you should have seen the amount of dirty water flushing out! it was almost as much as when i first did it (installing the bar, about a month ago)...

bloody dusty landcruiser park!!!

make sure you hose the whole front area out before the sahara bar goes on man its well worth the effort 8-)

You don't need a filter, just oil up an Explorer holeproof sock. It is designed to stop the bees, flies & dragon flies getting in. I reckon they probably work better oiled but haven't tried it myself.

You can get six pairs of these off of eBay for $19.95 (plus $10.70 shipping), which granted is a bit more than the unifilter pre-filter but you get 12 rather than one, and they are black rather than that horrible green/black of the unifilter

Details at http://cgi.ebay.com.au/6-PAIRS-OUTDOOR-BLACK-WOOLEN-SOCKS-EXPLORER-ADVENTURE-/170513299023?pt=Men_s_Clothing&hash=item27b362764f

I can stress that I am in no way affiliated with the seller "jonojohno20004", nor have I ever tried this, but it is just cheaper, therefore better.

Also -WD40 should work just as well as oiling it - after all... it's just a friggin sock

Alternatively - a pair of your missus stockings would probably work nearly as well, but the oil (WD40) doesn't stick as well and it is quite difficult stretching aligning the toe-pad directly over the ram head. It also looks lame

Looking good Fridge.
Tell me and a legit question here...why do you need to oil the sock? A mate told me this and whilst waiting at ARB getting more work done :) they said not to oil it because it clogs quicker and won't let air through?!
Found just a foam cover off EBay was about $12, not too bad I thought but I like Fnordy's idea about the socks, much cheaper alternative :)

So with all of that said, I'm now really confused about the oiling it part...to do or not to do?

When my baysies come in, I'm painting them blue... I think...

// I have to get out on the road with you guys, this is driving me nuts, could learn heaps from you all me thinks and lose a motsa of coin in the process...

Looks like you're addicted now Joel. It'll look awesome with the colour coded bar 8-)

Personally I don't think I'd oil the pre filter if it's a sock or something not specifically designed as a filter (not that I have a problem with using socks or stockings for that) as it's just PRE filtering.

I think it would collect heaps of dust and stuff but as it's not designed for longer cleaning intervals you may find it sucked/jammed inside the air box if you do a really bad dusty trip in convoy for a few days?

I was surprised just putting along at 20kph on a normal not overly dusty trip tail end Charlie often gets choked and blinded by the dust of a few cars.

Lookin good Fridgie!!!

Apologies about the sock hijack - was actually just being silly after a few drinks over lunch

I know the Snokel has the grooves / outlets so that water it catches will run down the outside rather than down into the filter. Does the prefilter slow down the water thus letting it all the way through?

(have never seen the inside of a Safari Snorkel so don't know just how they stop water getting in, just read that they did)

Cheers

^^^ I think the pressure could tear the foam and end up inside....Just guessing :?

I wouldnt oil any prefilter as above somewhere it would clog with dust preventing airflow........

Looking good Fridgie, notice any improvement with the Unifilter?

Admittedly I had driven through rain on the way home, before that you couldn't see the lettering on the front
The airbox filter is clean as a whistle :D

Slight feeling as if it spools up a tad quicker, seemed to get a bit better economy than last trip there too, very glad I fitted it now!
