Safari snorkel VIBRATION can you stop it?

Postby mgc_020 on Fri Dec 13, 2013 8:14 pm

I have just had a Safari snorkel fitted to my ML 3.2 and it has a bad vibration at certain revs usually 2300rpm. Is there anyway to stop this or do I just have to put up with it? Cheers

Whereabouts are you getting the vibration mate? Are we talking a noise, or a rattle, or what sort of thing? Which end?

I'd be getting someone to rev it and stick your hand on it and apply force in various spots until the vibration dies down then maybe look at the nearest fixing to that point to see if it's loose. Mine doesn't vibrate. Has been rock solid for maybe 2 years now.

There is one mounting bolt that is hard to access.
The installer may have had trouble getting to it and not done it up.
From my fading memory it's near the bend where it starts to go up the pillar.
Do as Dave said above to locate where it's coming from first and then take it back to the installer to rectify it.

my upper bolts that were originally installed were too small (or the hole was too big  ) and were pulling out of the turret. replaced with larger stainless units.

I had a bit of a resonance in mine which was the grille on the intake. Only happened at high rpm (5-6000) but travelled what seemed to be right across the firewall. I never fixed it, but tried without it and definitely gone.

Hi Guys,
After some help with an issue of a loud snorkel I just had fitted yesterday from ARB Safari brand this thing from 2000 rpm sounds like a flat resonating old mans fart then stops and goes back to the turbo spool up sound after 3000 rpm. This is a real pisser as it sounds great below hat point and after it but in that zone jeeez what a bag of poo.
ARB just said that all tritons do that "I find that quite odd in itself".

Any ideas and help would be fantastic I'm running a K&N filter with an ECUTEK tune but pretty sure thats not the issue.

Cheers,

This is the same symptoms I have, however it doesn't happen all the time. Notice that it happens more when the weather is warmer and after the vehicle has been running for sometime. More so when the A/C has been running for sometime.

It always sounds like something is loose that is causing the resonance. Have looked under the bonnet and carn't find anything loose. Really starting to annoy me as it seems to happen more frequently.

My triton has no resonance...
I installed my snorkel with large s/s washers in the guard and lots of Sikaflex...
I don't have a problem all tritons don't sound like that...
It's a install problem...

I put a piece of bike tube under the pillar mount and rattle/resonance disappeared

Mines not coming from the pillar mount, it's from further down.

I recon if you guys pull it off and reinstall with Sikaflex on all mounting points it will solve the problem....there is a few mounting nuts that are hard to get on they could have been left off by installer or rattled off from rough roads ..
that's why I used Sikaflex to install...

I have an ML triton and rang ARB to get a quote on installing a safari snorkel. He quoted me $750 which i was happy with. But then he said "argh, ML triton, its another $250 to relocate the radiator overflow".

Does that sound right?

yes it is true but $1000 for a Safari installed is ridiculous.

Try a price somewhere else.

Call Macquarie 4x4 and ask for a quote over the phone (even if you cant use them). They are reputable.

plenty on here will tell you to cut it yourself of course.

I spent 12 hours putting a 100amp battery above the spare tyre. And it took me 14 hours to put new suspension on. To be honest, reading some of the fiddly stories, i'm happy to pay someone to do this job! But mate, $1,000!

Yeah to me that price is bullshit. I paid $650 for mine but used opposite lock.

For what it is worth you'll find the ARB list price here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/81008840/ARB_September13_Retail_Price_List_RT20130901.2.pdf

And seriously, $196 for the overflow bottle? It would want to be gold plated...
