beware eBay snorkel kits with stainless steel overflow

Thought I'd share my disappointing experience with an ebay snorkel kit. I have a MN MY13 GLX dual cab.

Be careful when buying any ebay snorkel kit that comes with a cylindrical stainless steel radiator coolant overflow bottle, to replace the white plastic factory bottle. All (I believe) snorkel kits will require you to relocate, trim or replace your coolant overflow bottle as it gets in the way of the snorkel joiner into the filter box.

The stainless steel replacement is intended to mount across the front of the engine bay, using the same holes used by the power steering reservoir. Plus, the bracket at the bottom of the cylinder has 2 holes that do not match up with anything in the bottom of the engine bay.

I contacted the ebay shop to point this out, and they basically shrugged, said "too bad, we're just a reseller, not an engineering company, I guess you'll have to relocate the power steering reservoir or find another place for the overflow" !!

You'll know there's not a lot of space in the engine bay. I've got my Provent 200 mounted off the back of the filter box, and theres not much more space available near the front.

I nearly bought a similar kit from ebay store juleslife4x4, which apparently provides a slightly smaller white plastic overflow bottle, which looks factory standard. This would have been a safer bet.

The ebay store said their stainless steel replacement is a copy of the Safari Snorkel kit, and the white plastic one from other kits is copied from the Ironman 4x4 kit. Can't say if this is true either way, but interesting....

This is the bottle I received, which shows my dilemma.

I'm probably going to leave the factory overflow bottle in place, and try to figure out a better way of mounting it. I remember reading about people removing the plastic mounting lug, plastic welding and other solutions.... bit more research to do I guess.

The stainless overflow container is for the ML, not the MN which has power steering fluid reservoir relocated to the right hand side.

They probably should have specified this in their ad, but it's something that's been known here for a few years now.

If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay us to do it?

Yeah they listed the snorkel as "New Snorkel Kit Air Intake Mitsubishi Triton ML MN 2006 Onwards 4x4 4WD Diesel" so I've asked them to change the product description to ML 2006 - 2010 only. We'll see if they listen !

I suppose if you really want to you could lodge an eBay/paypal case to have the kit rectified or refunded.

Double check the ad and maybe email again to say you sought further advice and it is for a MN series and their ad is wrong?

Or if you can make it work just make it work :)

The ebay ad definitely states its compatible with ML & MN 2006 & beyond. I sent them a message point this out, and that I've been advised by other owners its a well known issue the stainless steel bottle is only for the ML kit.

In defense of the ebay store, they apologized, and are offering to refund me the purchase price of a replacement bottle that will fit, which is good of them. I dont fancy trying to relocate the power steering reservoir, and then deal with Mitsubishi if I get some issue they want to blame on the relocation job.

Just need to find a separate overflow bottle that can be purchased separately. Any suggestions where I can get one?

I have this really nice stainless steel one...... :D

Or you could do something like this. Bit over $10 at Supercheap and lasted for years so I never bothered putting the stainless one in.

Or, you can have a look at har051's way to fit the original bottle in.....

Or, cut and plastic weld the original....

Don't stress it's just an overflow, any vessel you can secure with a pipe running to it will be sufficient. Could even just run a tube to release under the car

It's a recovery system so best not to do that as it will introduce air to the system.
