New Triton Exceed - Rusty Engine Part - Solved

Postby milhous2 on Tue Jul 26, 2016 5:30 pm

Hello, hoping for some advice here from experienced users. I have just purchased a new Triton Exceed and spotted this rusty part in the engine bay. I have been advised this is normal from the dealership / service people. Is this normal? I have attached a picture which is taken from the passenger side of the engine bay. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It probably is normal sadly, looks really bad though doesn't it. Not what you'd expect on a new car.

How are you finding the exceed otherwise? I was really torn between the GLS and the exceed and decided to save the few grand and go the gls, push start and leather would have been really nice though!

I think it's part of the EGR. I haven't looked at mine lately but I don't think it was that rusty. Cast iron parts that are in the exhaust stream would get too hot to paint so will probably get some surface corrosion.

Yep your spot on --a squirt of wd40 will make it look a little better....

Its pretty sad how many bits come with 'showroom' corrosion at no extra charge.

They could treat bits like that pipe but its all about cost cutting.

I'd just hit it with some steel wool and wipe it with some oil that'll bake on or maybe some stove paint if your really fussy.

I find the amount of unpainted areas under the vehicles like suspension components, etc are also disappointing.

Thanks Guys - so basically this appears to be "standard" on all new Triton Exceeds? Keep in mind this photo was taken recently and the vehicle has only done 400kms. It's currently back at "Service" getting this looked at and another thing I will be posting about soon. It's a little sad to see on a shiny new car that you spend top dollar on. Other than that I'm very happy with the vehicle and I chose it for a number of other reasons along with good recommendations from fellow work mates that are also Triton owners.

I'm curious to know how WD-40 will do the trick mentioned above?

If any of you are kind enough to share photos of the same location please do as I'm looking for comparisons.

Thanks for allowing me into the group and I'm happy I've joined here!

Protection on new vehicles for storage and shipping seems a lot less than years ago. My early Holdens were covered in protective goop and the dealer actually earned some of the Predelivery charge.

I'm not impressed how a new vehicle can be out in the lot for several months exposed to the elements and then flogged off at a premium price, most brands do it.

The big questions are now...

Will this part get worse?

Will the rust spread to other parts?

Will I have to replace this part if it gets worse?

Should it be replaced now as the vehicle is just new?

Thanks heaps :)

Given it looks like it's the EGR pipe, if will get pretty hot and would rust at some point down the track anyway, yes it looks terrible but I'm not sure I'd get overly concerned about it.

You could get it ceramic coated, for that "performance" look

Seriously though, they seem to be putting less and less effort into paint/coatings on new cars :(

Ive seen a couple at dealerships like that, more so those that have been started and moved and haven't had a chance to get hot ( up to operating temp), when I got mine it was like new only 9km on clock and even now with 3000km on it, it still looks good as its always allowed to get up to temp.
You will find its because of the hot exhaust gas inside (EGR) on a cold engine, when the EGR operates the cast outer sweats, all good don't panic. As stated above a bit of wd40 etc on a rag and wipe it over

Thanks WUNSIE!

I've got my new car back now and will see how it goes. There's definitely nothing really to worry about.

You guys have been very helpful letting me know what's going on.

Most cars with cast exhaust manifolds have surface corrosion under the shiny heat shield. I'm the same though and prefer not to see surface rust on new engine parts. :(

When I collected my Triton it had been built literally weeks prior to delivery Mar/Apr and I picked it up in May and there was some surface corrosion visible on that EGR pipe. Not as bad as yours though. It's almost like they're rusty from the factory!

Chill people cast iron has different property's to steel ...it won't rust away to nothing it gets a bit of surface rust and that's about it...just like a pot belly stove or your camp oven...if you hate the look! like I said spray or wipe wd40 or some oil...and drive...

Yep as already said it is a cast iron piece much like your exhaust manifold/turbo exhaust housing that unless ceramic coated will quickly develop surface rust. Same as brake rotors, if the vehicle sits for a week or two they will start getting a bit orange.
