NSW Tyre and Wheel Size Laws

Legally in NSW "The outside diameter of the wheel and tyre combination must be no more than 15mm over the largest diameter wheel and tyre combination specified for the vehicle.

In the case of the MQ Triton, all models have an outside wheel and tyre combination diameter of 29.5 inches. To remain within the state law and in effect, keep your insurance valid, a wheel and tyre combination should not exceed exactly 30.090551.

Avaialable 16 inch tyres sizes:
    235/75R16 (29.9x9.3R16) taller and narrower
Available17 inch tyre size:
    265/60R16 (29.5x10.4R17) Wider
    235/70R17 (30.0x9.3R17) Taller and Narrower
    275/60R17 (30.0x10.8R17) Taller and Wider

The standard also states "You should also be aware that modifications to your car could make the insurance cover void. Always check with your insurance company before you make any alteration to your car." http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/documents/roads/safety-rules/standards/vsi-09-rev4.pdf

I spoke with my insurance company who advised me that technically if a vehicle is not roadworthy, it is not insured. As an owner of an insurance policy, it is your responsibility to inform the insurance provider of the modification, if it is not legal, then your policy should be cancelled by them. If a claim is made, it comes down to whether the assessor is thorough and decides to knock back the claim due to the vehicle not being roadworthy.

Now in reality, what experiences have you had or heard of when making a claim and tyres are larger that what the law permits? 30 inches for the MQ Triton.
