MQ wont start.

Postby Levo75 on Wed Jul 15, 2020 6:35 pm

Hi guys, long time reader first time poster.
I have an issue with my MQ, when i try to start it turns over once or twice then cuts out. Turn the key off and on, turns over twice, cuts out. It wont fire at all. Battery is good. Have tried jumping just in case.
I have searched the forum for a similar issue, but cant find anything.
Any help will be appreciated.

No mate i dont. It is some kind of electrical issue though. Thought the clutch switch was playing up but have eliminated that as a problem. Drove the car into the shed yesterday, wont start today. Strange.

Ok.. Did you drop the key? did it fall apart? If so the little chip might have fallen out of the key, as the car Sounds like it is immobilised

If it's the key, try the spare key.

So after trying again after work, i have found when i turn the key i have about 2-3 seconds before power cuts out. So if i turn the key, to glow then try to start, i have nothing. Then i have to turn the key off and back on, try to start it turns over for 2 seconds then cuts out. Calling auto elec tomorrow unless someone has any idea.

ok turn ignition on in neutral. Go under the bonnet, open fuse box. left front corner of the fuse box is the starter relay. Remove this and use a piece of wire as a small jumper cable to go from battery positive to the largest terminal of the relay that is next to the 2 small terminals. this will crank engine. if it doesnt run then it is immobilised.

Ok so as it turns out, the car was immobilised.
In a strange turn of events, I thought i would open the key to make sure the chip was in there, nothing. The chip had somehow fallen out, although it was a bit broken around the small screw, i dont know how it fell out. And the spare key had been damaged by the previous owner and was missing the chip aswell. Long story short, we found the chip for the main key on the floor in the car, put it back in and it started.
Thanks DibbyDibbyDJ for your help.

Not that strange really. At least half the cars towed into our garage with a non start have this same problem. The other half a Pajero sport owners filling up their tank with petrol
