OK, here's my fix. I think it turned out pretty good.
Firstly, here's the shitty valve protecting the MN diff, in your $40K plus vehicle. Only thing holding it on was the rubber washer that was siliconed to the diff, then the plug pushed into that. Cheap, shitty, nasty method.
Since I killed it anyway removing it, I pulled it apart to see what it was inside. That crappy spring is nasty....once corroded or it loses tension, forget diff protection!

Remove it, and all thats left is a 16mm hole. Why Bitsa deleted a proper fitting is beyond me, especally when they still left the breather tube attachment on the crossbar, as used in the ML to attach the far end of the diff breather pipe!

I wanted a good quality filter setup. Got this on eBay from Billet Racing. Custom made, with K&N filter inside. Around $200 for the kit, as I recall. It's been sitting around in my shed for about 5 months now, and it was time to install.

So, how to fit a small threaded peg into a large round hole? Considered tapping, but it was a BIG hole, and doing so without getting metal in the diff was going to be dfficult. So, option 2 was use a nut in washer. However, at the bolt place, they suggested a blank threaded plug, with a tread the same as my breather kit fittings, which was perfect for the job. Got a big thick washer to fit it into, and we're set!

Considered doing it myself, but was a bit hesitant. It really needs TIG, SO, got in a pro to do it. Did a beautful job.

Unfortunately, it's a little tight down there, even with the car on the hoist, so the poor bugger hit a brake line by mistake. Thought he was going to die there and then on the spot. Teeny hole in the alloy line, and brake fluid everywhere. We both realised we should have removed the brake line before starting, and it's something I'd suggest anyone else do if they try this themselves. Doing the thing on a hoist is DEFINATELY the way to go, too, if you have access to one.

Oh well, a new line is only $24, and fluid $8, so no biggie. I'll give him some to cover it, even though he said it was a freebie because of it. He did do a nice job.
So, now just to paint, fit breather lines and filter, and replace brake line. Then done all proper-like!
Total cost:
Normally, around $85-$200 for the filter, depending what type you get.
$2.00 for the threaded plug and washer
$50 for welding.
Not that much, all in all.
Now I won't stress going down the beach!
