You're probably a pioneer here... throw up a photo of the factory unit and someone might recognise how it's installed.

In the previous model the shroud over the top was all clipped on and would pull straight off (towards the back). Photos should give us an idea if this will be the same.

Keen to find out how to remove the stereo hood as well. Any photos or a video would be of great assistance.

Here's a video of doing the previous model - does the hood look similar?

Well that doesn't look like fun at all. I have NFI I'm afraid.

I would say, from previous working on double din units, that the surround that incorporates the air vents should pop off.
Everything these days seems to just clip together.
All the trim on my daughters mazda 2 from the top of the dash right down through the centre console is just clipped together and can be removed with a plastic trim remover.

I know on a 2007 hilux i had that was similar in that the whole fascia came off to get to the stereo that there were screws behind the aircon controls.

This doesn't necessarily mean anything in this case but maybe.

What he said.

I reckon there'll be clips at the top and screws at the bottom and if so you'd probably need to remove the trim below the stereo/vent surround first to get to the screws.

My guess is these screws will be concealed by that trim piece and they'll be directly below the vents.

I'd start by taking the trims off from below the steering wheel and the glove box, then try to get the piece below the stereo off.

Take some photos and post them up. Somebody's gotta be the first to do it and mostly, I wanna see if I was right :-)

don't forget to take the dials off the control knobs
check inside the vents if you can access any clips/ screws, or if they come out by themselves to provide better grip/ access

see where ever there is resistance and see if you can pry those spots- autopro (and other places) sell plastics trim removal tools, mush better than flat bladed screwdrivers or knives (yes been there have the scratches on the trims to prove it)

Sucks to be you, glad I bought a 3.2 :o

I'm definitely interested in this - please let us know how you go! I reckon an android white box special from ebay will be a great addition to my future GLX (reversing camera and GPS for less than $300).

Just need to do the homework! :D

Beauty. That is pretty much the sort of unit what I was looking at. Did you happen to run a reverse camera to it?

@nicholaswells - hey mate, any hints on how you get the facia off? I've had a look and have all the trim removal tools, but no idea what I'm doing :) Definitely feel like I'm about to break something!

not sure if anyone is still chasing an answer on this.. I had a look the other day and it seems the ac control cables have to be disconnected from the HVAC housing. One cable on the drivers side and two on the left. Once these are disconnected the fascia pops straight off

You need to spread the clip open to allow the cable to pop off. Bit fiddly but if you have giant thumbs that helps.

Once you've got that off the eyelet on the cable pops off easily.
