Steering wheel not straight on new Triton

Postby Drunken015 on Mon Mar 12, 2018 9:29 pm

Hey guys, I just picked up a my18 Triton from the dealer today and over the course of driving it around I noticed the steering wheel isn't centered, so driving straight means the steering wheel is rotated right by about 10-15 degrees. If I center the wheel while driving the car drifts left. Is this a known issue with a quick fix or am I going to have to take to the service department to get the steering column looked at?

I'd have to say I'm surprised that such a substantial alignment issue would not be picked up in pre-purchase checks. Perhaps it wasn't there when they did them and it has occurred because something is not right... something that could rapidly and perhaps catastrophically worsen.

I would contact the dealer straight away and get it rectified ASAP.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm arranging the service team to look at it over the next few days.

Very unlikely that is what is required. It's far more likely the wheels have been aligned incorrectly.
Fixing it will probably require adjusting tie rods etc., not just straightening the wheel by spinning it relative to the steering column.

There is a chance that the wheel was put on not straight, but regardless, the first thing to do is to make sure the adjustment of the tie rods is even before you think about taking the steering wheel off.

Probably should ask for a refund on that 'pre delivery' charge on the invoice.

Years ago, one of my Commodores started scrubbing out the front tyres. On taking it back to the dealer to get rectified, it was pointed out to me that wheel alignment check was not part of predelivery.

So, potentially, it seems OK to let vehicles off the lot, 'pigeon toed', cross eyed and sometimes without lubricants!

My 2018 GLS Triton was the same, I alerted the dealer to it at the 1500km service and they gave it a front end alignment which remedied the problem.
Cheers

Steering wheel issue part 2.

Postby Drunken015 on Fri Mar 23, 2018 4:07 pm

So I dropped off my car at 8am and picked it up off the dealer at 4:30pm.
Because I've done over 900km the service team decided to do the 1500km complimentary service.
It's great having a small dash cam that records audio.
They got around to moving the car at 4pm. Drove it a few kms to adknowlege the issue. Took it back to the workshop. Didn't lift it just adjusted the steering wheel directly. Drove it out for a few more mins and I then picked it up.
So it appears that the dealership didn't do the 1500km service (unless it's just driving and checking engine noises). Did they fudge my service manual?. B
Anyways my steering is pretty good now. And im glad i have the camera.
What should I say to the dealership when I call em tomorrow?

The 1500km complimentary is only a check and tighten ( so to speak ) and more importantly, for you to raise any issues, such as rattles, squeaks, something which fails to work.
They will then have a quick squiz and if it requires a parts ordered they will get you to book a time
Was the 8am drop off and 4.30 pick up set by you, if it was, they probably took it as a non rush job and focused mainly on the PAID services

Thanks mate that makes sense. First time going through this process so I'm super sceptical and paranoid.
