P0546 - Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Circuit High

Postby MarkoMN on Sun Oct 31, 2021 12:28 pm

Hey all,

On a trip for the last 2 weeks up to Coral bay WA and back to Perth, I was towing a 2.5 T Caravan. on the first day up in the first 2 hours of our drive the weather was nuts and had massive head winds.

on pushing the pedal down heading up a hill in 4th ( automatic gear box) The check engine light came on. I stopped and checked it on my EDC and found Error code P0546 - Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Circuit High come up. now i thought maybe i was pushing it too hard and the EGT was heating up way to much so slowed it down and didn't push it as hard and she stopped coming up. ( it came up about 5 time on the way to Kalbarri)

Last year i was towing a 2.6T Caravan and did not have any issues what so ever...

I noticed when i kept within the following parameters that it stopped triggering the Error code but wanted to know what i should do next. (i have engaged with a mechanic to check things out, but has anyone else had similar issues?)

Code Triggered when the following happened
MAP:240-255
IAT: 62-72
ECT: 95

No code would trigger if i kept within these parameters
MAP: 230 and below
IAT:72 and below
ECT: 98 and below
----------------------

ECT never went over 101 and IAT average was between 60 and 72 degrees
Keeping the MAP at 230 and below seemed to be the most effective way of not triggering the code

is this just a case of replacing the EGT sensor or is there something more sinister going on?

Thanks for any help in advance guys :?:

Standard exhaust?
Chip or tune?

I know it looks like it's a different problem but I'd be willing to bet it's related.

https://www.newtriton.net/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=12233

There is an optimum exhaust size for every engine and, for a 2.5l diesel, 3" is too big. I suspect that the exhaust is changing the flow, resulting in heat soak and the subsequent error as EGTs go above what the ECU is programmed to accept. A quality chip can monitor this and reduce power a touch when EGTs approach the limit. A custom tune should be able to achieve the same thing if you're not willing to change the exhaust.

Alternately, learn to give the throttle a little blip from time to time when towing uphill.

And to add that heat soak is a known problem with MQ and MR Tritons. Manifolds can crack easily, and whilst covered under warranty regardless of most modifications, A repeat failure and subsequent claim will be denied.

2016 MQ probably out of warranty now, but its certainly worth avoiding the problem if you can

Not related, I'm betting he's talking about MQ or MR. MNs never had EGT sensors or Dpf's.
But yeah 3" zorst is still too big and just a waste of money. I'd be looking at a possible dpf issue?

MN Triton (l200) had DPF back in 2010 in some markets, and as they exceed the AU emissions standards have been able and were brought here in small numbers.

Well, F me in A! Never knew MNs came here with DPF's. Bummer, unlucky to get one.
