uhf install

Postby whitetrite on Sun Sep 14, 2008 6:17 pm

hi all
i installed my uniden uh015sx uhf today and was stoked to find the tansceiver fits under the console it was a simple job to get the console out and i can still reach the jacks if i have to change the arial or plug in an external speaker. the plug for the remote lead to the head set can be reached by popping out the square storage tub on top of the console.
cheers
sorry the pics are a bit average i had to use my phone to take them

Nice install whitetrite 8-)

I just bought one of these for our other car, is the volume loud enough from the speaker without an external?

thanks subi
plenty of volume from the unit, slighty muffled but acceptable.
if anyone wants to do a more tricked up install with this unit the display unit fits in the over head sunny holder, you would need a longer display cable but.
how is the new bus going anyway.

Whitetrite

Nice job there mate. i was thinking of under the drivers seat but was worried about it getting wet in the event i get stuck on a crossing.
But where you have it is perfect.

Can you tell me how to remove centre console?
Is it all bolts and screws or is there some clips as well?
Any tips would be great.

King, on a manual Triton there are two screws in the bottom of the storage box, and a couple of clips at the front to remove the rear section of console (you need to pop out and disconnect the switch/aux socket panel too). The front section has another couple of screws, and two panel pins at the front. The trim around the radio has to be loosened and after unscrewing the gearknobs, the front section of console comes out 8-)

The new bus is going very well, thank whitetrite, it was definitely a good upgrade :)

Cheers

Wish I had a remote unit like that.
Is there room to fit a normal sized radio with an attached face in there?

You can fit a standard din size unit in there, have a look a my profile.
There is a rubber grommet on the passenger side where the standard wiring harness comes through the firewall. All my wiring comes through there.

Nice install whitetrite looks very neat ;)

Guys if you have factory Bluetooth, there is no room under the centre console to mount the radio body like whitetrite has done, as that's where the BT box is mounted :(

No mate, the 3440 is going into our Kluger where there is nowhere nice to mount a remote faced radio on it's curvy dash. I was on a limited budget, and bought the cheaper Uniden to put into the Triton - complicated I know, but I always seem to do things the hard way

thanks king triton
to remove the auto console remove the two bolts in the rear storage box, pop out rear window switch panel and disconect wires, rear half of console is only cliped to front half so with a bit of twisting it pops up and away, remove two bolts on rear part of front console, there are two round clips on the side of the console at the front push in the center circle as you pull and they pop out , unscrew the 4wd knob , on the front of the auto selector there are two scews , remove them so you can twist the knob and the console will slid up over it , if the button on the selector pops out dont worry its easy to get back in just staighten the knob and push it down to were it belongs , lift slightly and button will go back in.

I also put an Icom non-remote head in the same place and it fitted with the bluetooth box as well. The missus nearly had a heart attack when she came home to find me using a hacksaw on the new console

The factory Bluetooth unit under console is held in place by 4 bolts, undo these bolts, slide unit back (tight) and re-fit only 2 bolts in the front of bluetooth unit. Now you have enough room to fit UHF base unit. Worked well with mine anyway.

Was wondering what is the BEST ariel you can use and do you get better range with any of the wiz bang units :? :? :?:

I seem to remember reading that a 9.1 dba or something like that was the ariel to go for but not being very knowledgeable about radios thought someone else might know :?

Just brought an Oricom UHF050 which I will be installing in the same place (in front of gear lever under ashtray) today. I will post some pics when done.

Really good value radio.

I was told that 3dba is for hilly country and 9dba is for flat terrain. I brought a 4.5dba which is supposed to be a good compromise. The higher the dba the flatter the signal, so if you're at the base of a hill with a high dba aerial, then the signal may not get down into the valley because it is too narrow.

joel1234 is correct.

Higher gain = more signal directed towards the horizon.
Lower gain = more signal spread upwards into the sky

Makes stuff all difference in convoy :D

Was also wondering if these things extend range as we're looking for as much range as possible as we travel to some pretty remote spots at times :? :?:

No, they are for boosting TV signals when you live in a bad reception area.

To boost UHF CB transmission in flat country areas you will be better off with a high gain antenna. Alternatively you need to boost power greater than 5 watts - but that would be illegal

this might be a dumb question but I know sfa about UHF. Is there anyway to connect both a low gain and a high gain antenna at the same time? or can you have two run through a switch box of some sort and turn on one for the hills and one for the flats?

I've always wondered that CD - the truckies seem to have a few aerials and I couldn't imagine them having more than one radio...
