Upgrading intercooler after dyno remap & exhaust mods

Postby AussieAnth on Wed Aug 15, 2018 10:42 am

I've got a 2013 MN manual dual cab.

Relevant mods are 3" exhaust with cat & muffler, K&N filter, snorkel, and dyno remap with EGR delete and a 10" fan on the factory intercooler I trigger on demand (lowers intake temps approx 10deg).

Is upgrading the intercooler (looking at Forefront industries with pipe kit, approx 25% bigger capacity) after the remap likely to bring any benefits other than lower EGT's when towing?

Obviously upgrading before the remap would have been ideal.
Happy with my remap performance. Little more conservative than wild. Still retaining good economy and boost seems to peak in the low 20's.

Wondering if I'd likely notice any benefit daily driving around town or on the freeway with a bigger intercooler.

Hi AussieAnth,

I have done the same with exception of the exhaust and the fan on the intercooler. I am looking at getting the same intercooler upgrade kit. Any chance that you have some pics of the fan on the intercooler.

I spoke to my mechanic and he said that you will get more power if a remap is done after the upgraded intercooler, but he said that it will give you a good buffer on really hot days especially if your towing a camper etc.

yeah thats basically what I expected -> no immediate improvement but helpful in hot weather and/or when towing, which is worthwhile for me since I occasually tow a 1.2 tonne camper typically with a load of extra weight in the Triton in the warmer months. I'll still look to upgrade when I can affoard it.

As for the fan, I bought from AliExpress a 10" (I think!) 80w reversable slim fan. The reversable feature is important because i needed to install it behind the intercooler, pulling air through, not pushing, so the blades get flipped....or maybe I reversed the polarity...cant remember it was 2 years ago. Either way not a big job. Couldnt fit it in front of the intercooler due to the winch. Had to remove about 25% of the shroud over the back of the fan to allow it to slide down further as there is a cross bar behind the intercooler making it a tight fit. Bar didn't foul on the fan blades so it works fine.

I've wired it up via a rocker switch in the cabin & a relay in the engine bay. I can flick it on anytime, but I need to connect it to ignition so it can't run when the engine is off.

I'll see if I have photos I can upload later.

I think this is the one I bought, or one very much like it.

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/10-12V-Universal-Electric-Radiator-80W-Car-Auto-Slim-Reversible-Cooling-Fan-for-Car-water-tank/32899353822.html?

I removed 2 sections of the plastic spokes that extend from the centre to the outside, and cut out the round sections connecting them to the next spoke. This exposed about 1/4 of the fan and allowed me to slide it down on the engine side, with the open side to the intercooler, and the spokes resting against the cross bar behind the intercooler. I used the included zip tie style strips to secure it to the intercooler, and it sits nicely in place. Removing the 2 spokes lets you slide it down further, otherwise the fan would barely cover half the intercooler.

Hope that helps.

In my opinion they do work better.Spent some time setting up the lights so I’m not blinding people The triton is a common car for me it’s about standing out from the crowd (it’s a tug for our jayco) catch can install Wednesday after ripping out the old intercooler (chocka full of oli) thought with the new intercooler I don’t want it acting as catch can/intercooler cheers

Same lights, but a bit cheaper, direct from the manufacturer. There are some more options on colours, etc.

Has anyone measured intake temps before and after installing a new intercooler?

Plenty of people saying they're good, but no actual info on if it makes a difference.

Hey mate, i upgraded mine from stock to Greddy one for the Evos. On my ML
Massive size difference. Stretching the memory as its been a while now but usually the temp was around 90 and now comfortably around 60 under all conditions. Boost is set to 22psi. Temps monitored with Torque Pro
