How many of you experience squeaky leaves?

Postby Nick Bagus on Thu May 16, 2019 4:51 pm

I know this topic has been spoken about once, so apologies for bringing it back up, but the squeak leaf suspension i'm experiencing from my MQ GLS (about 12,000km old) is ridiculous...

It didn't do it at all until recently after a trip to Robe's Little Dip National Park. I gave it a big high-pressure wash afterwards to get rid of any residual sand/salt and sprayed the shit out of the leaf packs.

I'm going to head down to the local hardware store and get some WD40 and hope that does the trick.

Does everyone else experience my pain? Stock suspension i might add.

There is already a quite long thread on this topic in the Fourth Generation (ML/MN) section. Link here

Although I'm going to allow this thread to continue in its own right please contain comments to Fifth Generation (MQ/MR) vehicles and note that the problem is essentially the same, affecting most leaf sprung utes, and that the solutions will also be the same.

If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay us to do it?

Mine developed a squeak quickly after a suspension upgrade, 1500 km or so.
Took quite a while to pinpoint exactly where it was coming from,
Eventually worked out it was from 1 of the guide shackles, (between the diff & the front hanger) it was not quite sitting square and when the leaf pack flexed it rubbed on the side of the shackle.
There is some "wear pad" on the inside of this shackle but it wore through that pretty quick.
Once I squared up the leaf pack inside this shackle the squeak disappeared, not sure if it was out of square from the install or after the first trip off road 2 weeks later...
Either way I resolved it but it took ages to find it.

Some aftermarket suspension have silencers for the leaf, a kind of thin material that you put between the leafs. Sprays stop it for a while. Good luck.

Yup, it works.............for a while.

Bike chain lube lasts a bit longer but the essential bit is to straighten the pack up regularly. The leaves get very untidy after a good flexing session.

For everyone's benefit, just had the 15k service and told the dealer about the squeaky leaves, ended up having the bushes (i believe) replaced under warranty and she's all good. Hopefully doesn't come back onquickly!
