Removing The Head Unit

Removing The Head Unit

Postby Mongrel on Mon Sep 01, 2008 1:52 pm

Hey Guys,

I am going to attempt the Ipod cable install and I am having trouble removing the head unit. I noticed in the little guide posted here that it states to push a pop rivet or the like in the holes to release the head unit - but I can't work it out! Do I need to put it in all 4 at once? I can hear a little spring type sound, but it does nothing.

Any guidance here would be great.

PS:- I could not get the Mitsubishi cable, so i am making my own. Does anyone know if they are the standard 2.3mm Mini female spade connectors on the end?

Cheers

Hey Mongrel,
as far as i can tell their the same as most other 4 pin head units and all 4 require inserting at the same time. The geniune part usually does the 2 holes in either side at once so you only require 2 tools. Hope this helps.

Yeah you need to do all four at once if you can or try one side at a time ie. 2 x holes.
Here is a quick diagram so you know what you are trying to do.

Here is a copy of the Mitsi install instructions for the AUX cable

Hope you can see it well enuff from the picture.

When inserting the "screwdriver - rivet -rod - wire" whatever, angle the insertion direction slightly away from the head unit i.e towards the steering wheel for the right side and the glove box for the left; then once inserted sometimes you need to move it towards the head unit to trip the holding catch in behind.

I've removed mine many times and never had to "Pop" the catches more than one at a time.

Sorry i can't comment on the size of the female connectors,

Thanks guys for all your help.

I got the unit out - no probs. I used 4 nails. I tell you what though... they could have allowed more slack on the cable. I could not get mine out far enough and had to go in from the rear!! I could not pop the retainer off the main plug, so I managed to pop the plug off that I needed and could get to it that way.

Mitsubishi did not have any cables so I decided to make my own. I could not find any spade connectors that would fit - that was until I went digging. I found they are a similar size to those used in Computers.

Anyways... I have my iPhone working now and all good.

Thanks again guys.

Cheers

I just installed my ipod cable and thanks to all the info on here it was a breeze. I made a tool from a coat hanger to do all four holes at the same time. it worked a treat. Thanks to subi_man for the original post.
