Yeah that probably good advice there mate but just hate taking my car to dealers.:-? Would rather fix thinks myself if possible.
I will take a sample of the fluid before I flush it. I dont know why my coolant is this way? Maybe my stupid dealer topped it up last time with a non compatible coolant.:-o

It seems the ML's run a fair bit cooler than the little 2.5's, my ML also around mid 80's most of the time.

I do think in the 100's is way too high though. I would give it to the stealers to fix.
If you do a flush yourself you will only give them an excuse to say 'sorry you have void your warranty' even though that's a crock of s*#t.

I am surpirsed to see temps so high. My 07 ML Eng Temp consistently sits on 78-80 degrees most of the time, and the only time I ever saw it over 80 was when we were wheeling in the High Country ie massive workload and minimal airflow. What I have seen fluctuate a great deal has been my intake temp...

Engine temps.

My 08 ML single cab stayed consistently at 78c this morning, varying 1 or 2c every now and then at 110kmh down the m1, air intake fluctuates a little bit though, anywhere from 25c up to 45c, and skyrockets when parked

87-88 for 'country' driving.
I've never checked at freeway speeds.
Do very little city driving, so don't know what it does there.
Slow hills towing a trailer, I've seen it up at 95.

As manrajf says, external temperature seems to make no difference.

After keeping a keen eye on my temps all week it does seem a little higher than most mn here.:-? It all seems normal in the low 90's which is where it mostly is around town atm, but like I said it climbs to 98-100 going up small hills.

So I have been trying to work out if my viscous fan has been cutting in but so far haven't been able to see if it is? There is no fan noise at all when I'm in the high 90's  It sound the same when the engine is cold. Thought I should hear a roaring fan noise once I'm up at those high temps? How do I test my fan? I have spun it with my hand with the engine off and cold, seems to have the same resistant as it does when it's hot? Could this be my issue I wonder?:-?

I really do appreciate all your comments guys :-) I will take your advice and take it to the stealer first thing Monday. ;-)
I just like to figure things so I know what the problem is. These sorts of issues are hard to diagnose when every thing is running so well. What I mean is if I didn't have my Ultragauge I would have no idea that I'm running a bit hot because the factory gauge doesn't go beyond half way.

After a bit of testing today I have found that my viscous fan is not locking up even above 100 degrees  So me think this has a fair bit to do with my problem. As for the milky coolant in the overflow bottle?? Well that's a question for the mechanic. ;-) Im not too concerned about it because the coolant seems clean enough and the white sediment settles on the bottom of bottle if left over night. Maybe its normal? If I could ask a few of you to shine a bright torch through the side of your overflow bottles once your trucks have been sitting for a few hours and confirm what you see that would be great. ;-)

Not much!!!
It had its 45,000km service about 6 weeks ago and I stupidly didn't check the levels after the engine oil, brake fluid and coolant were changed.
Engine oil overfilled as per usual!
Brake fluid ok after wiping the mess off it.
Coolant nothing in the overflow bottle, radiator full, overflow pipe full. Topped it up with distilled water, nice and clean and green, no residual crap in the overflow bottle.

Thanks for getting me to check it.

The more powerful MN's have a hotter thermostat fitted. I've seen some cars with a 104 degree C 'stat fitted  .

A pressurised well maintained cooling system should deal with a 100 degree C coolant temp easily.

  Go the MN's!

Yeah so it seems the MN's run about 10 degrees hotter than the ML's from every one's reports. My cooling system is dealing with the higher than normal temps for now but I don't know how it will go in summer running around the country side right on GVM! :o And im still yet to fit my bull bar and winch.

Im convinced that my viscous fan is not cutting in? Managed to see 100 degrees after topping a moderate hill today, viscous fan was still as quite as a mouse like when the engine is cold. Dealer better not fob me off tomorrow or I wont be a happy chappy!

To compare it to last summer when I was on Fraser island for two weeks the temps only got to the mid 90's and the highest temp I saw was 110 degrees and that was hammering it hard on a hot day for 45min non stop in the soft sand to beat the incoming tide. I can remember hearing how loud my viscous fan was roaring. Factory temp gauge had hardly moved past half way too. Oh and I was close to my GVM with a camper on my back fully loaded.

@Srb how did you test the viscous fan, apparently there is a method where you get the truck upto temp and then get a rolled newspaper and run it though, if it stops the fan then the viscous fan is gone, if it shreds the paper its working well.

Here is a detailed vid
