That really surprised me Josh.

So I got my vernier and did some measuring and I found 'just over half way' was in fact right smack in between 3/4 and 1/4 :| - well actually a little bit more than that on one side.... but then, when I was using the 1/3 scale it is even more confusing, so I don't know where we go from here with this temp thing...digital is soooo much easier :ugeek:

Digging up bit of an old thread here... I have noticed my temperatures to be around the 90 to 100 degrees most of the time. (MN 2.5 hp) (Ultragauge readings) Have been monitoring it since new last year and now has 25k on the clock and runs as sweet as a nut, but I reckon it's a little warm. :? I have no bull bar yet and it bloody cold weather atm yet my temps are still high. If i'm cruising 110kph on the highway on the flat it will be in the high 90's? If I hold this speed up a small incline it rises to just over just over 100 degrees :? Does this seem right? The temps do go down to about 78-80 going down a long hill. During summer it hit 112 degrees going up a long climb  and stock temp gauge moved a little bit over half way before I backed off and crawled the rest of the way, admittedly I do carry quite a load all of the time but after checking the colour of my coolant in the overflow bottle I was a bit concerned :? And after reading the thread on ''seized 2.5'' I thought I'd ask other MN owners with Ultragauges what their temps are? Oh and my coolant in the overflow bottle was a milky green colour? I tipped it out and replaced it with water to see if it comes back. I took the radiator cap off and the coolant looked the normal green colour but had a white scaly residue stuck to the bottom of the filler. Could be normal but i'm really not sure:? I plan to put a bullbar on and bigger tyres on soon and do a big trip around Aus so just keeping an eye on all these sorts of things. ;) Any thoughts guy's? Oh and no I don't have mud and crap stuck in the core, this has been like it from new.

My temps usually sit between 88 and 94 on the commute to and from work, but thats at 110 with no load on the car whatsoever. It does sound a little warmer than it should be, is your viscous fan running constantly as well? I've found it comes on once you're over about 95degC

Mine is usually on about 90 but cycles up higher every now and then on freeway runs. My dealer mechanic reckoned it was designed to run hotter every now and then to help burn off carbon. I'm still a bit hesitant to accept that but I've seen it happen on long trips, the temp sneaks up at random and unrelated to load so it could be an ECU controlled thing. But yeah over 100 degrees I wouldn't be happy with on an ongoing basis.

Milky green does not sound good! I'd be taking it to the stealers and getting the cooling system pressure tested. Could be oil in the water indicating head gasket troubles.

Yeah good point, I haven't really noticed it at all? I can't recall It making any noticeable roaring noises when it gets hot. :? Will have to investigate this. Cheers mate. ;) EDIT- this is quoting Fraz's comment.

Mines an ml, but when I had temps like that my radiator was partially blocked internally, since the clean out sits around 79-80deg and maybe hits 85ish under load on a hot day.

Something doesn't sound quite right, would def get radiator checked out.

Yeah I know but it wasn't oily :? sort of like it had talcum powder mixed with in it. As soon as I tipped it out I kicked my self for not taking a photo. It goes in for 30k service soonish so will bring it to their attention.

I averaged 79-80 aswell fridge. Least I know somethings right ;) But along at 105-110kph it can get up a hill to 86-87 no load except a bike. Coolant is also bright green :) Maybe just my ML 8-)

What temps should we expect the viscous fan to cut in? Fraz mentioned 95 degrees? I can't recall mine ever cutting in  I hadn't thought about it before Fraz mentioned it.

Not sure on the fan cutting in but I reckon the MNs run a bit hotter than the MLs.

Yeah I agree, but I guess I'm saying it's safe to ignore the ML temps above and focus on the figures from those of us with the more powerful engines :P

Corect me if I'm wrong but taking into acount that Coolant and a pressurized system. water boils Around110 -120 degrees depending on the system my mechanic told me any thing above 100 degrees for more than 50% of the time is is a worry!

Just checked with a marine engineer he said "100c any time you have the start of a prob ie water pump radiator thermostat or all three...get it checked out cause it will only get worse with summer coming and cost you more in the long run"

Mine peaks at 94 almost regardless of ambient temp - mostly 91 to 92. I can't believe a dealer would think that they are designed to run hot occasionally - I call BS.

A wax pellet in a thermostat isn't that smart.... On the other hand, injection timing could be altered occasionally for a cat' clean out maybe? And that could stress the cooling system a bit.

Hmm mine got to 98 early this morning going up a short hill and it was bloody cold outside.
I checked my overflow bottle tonight and found a little more of that milky crud at the bottom, sort of looks like white algae.
I think I will do a flush and clean on the weekend and see what happens. I wouldn't have thought you would see this on a car thats only a year old.
