dual battery

Postby MR T on Mon Feb 09, 2009 7:25 pm

Has any one put a dual battery system in there cars and if so what configeration did you use .
Id like to put the second battery in the engine bay but so far no one does an of the shelf item as ive been told from arb , battery world and others there isnt enough room in there
and i dont have the room for it in the ute (Im a tradie and have lots of tools) so the only other place is under the ute on top of the main bar of the tow bar.
Access wont be very good though.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Welcome Mr T - There ARE underbonnet dual battery trays out there.

TJM, Pirahna for example... You can even pick them up from eBay

Hope that helps!

Good spot for a spare battery.

Lots of wasted space under Tubs on all these 4x4s.

i've been thinking of storage pods mounted in the cab floor foot wells - similar to Voyager, Renaults, etc.

anyone tried this?

I made a custom box that bolts under my tray like a tradie box (tray back). Full size battery and no problems.

Hi all,

Just a note to let everybody know that if you do fit a 2nd battery in a hidden position (IE under/in tray or behind rear seat) please consider a warning notice.

As a volunteer firefighter, one of the first things we do at a vehicle accident is to isolate the battery. If we don't know its there it puts you, emergency personal and your vehicle at risk of fire or explosion.

A good place to place the warning would be at the main battery.

This is a serious issue-lives can be at risk.

Another recommended idea is to make sure you have a good quality circuit breaker as close to the battery as possible, in case of short circuit.
If it is in harsh conditions eg under tray look at a marine quality breaker.-They are not cheap but your Triton is worth far more.

G'day,

I am getting a 105amp AGM battery fitted by ARB newcastle soon and it will go behind the rear seat. It is from memory 20 inches long and 4 inches wide. They have done them before and saves mucking about shifting things under the bonnet and gets the battery away from the heat of the motor as well.

Yes - Have a 100A/H Dual Battery mounted on top of towbar in plastic battery box. Vehicle is 2007 Dual Cab Triton GLX-R. Works a treat. Installed immediately after purchase in 2007 - at the time many places were happy to put it under the bonnet by "moving this thing here, moving that thing there, etc, etc to make room". Does not help warranty to move lots of stuff around in engine bay!

Hey Greg, I'm interested in this kind of set up also. Do you know what brand battery it is they're putting in? And whats it costing you if you don't mind me asking?

Cheers,

Given those dimensions etc I reckon that'd be the same Remco battery that I got. Have a look over here for the details: http://www.newtriton.net/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=4416&p=71406&hilit=remco#p71406

Cheers Dave, $395 at batteries direct. Thats actually cheaper than I paid for my Optimum 100AH AGM that I was going to mount in the tray. Might have to sell that one on I think.

Cheers,

So a sticker or a 2nd battery warning label on the crank battery might be a good idea...There just simply isn't enought room under the bonnet of an MN to get a decent battery in.

Benn - Has the MN changed that much ?

I have a Ml 3.5 petrol with two batteries... I think there a few Ml oilers with two batteries under the bonnet...

I'd be interested if other Mn owners have a problem with a second battery in the front...

there's only one or two guys that have done it from memory. the problem is that the new ASC modules are mounted on the firewall roughly in line with the battery so you have to move them to get the room you need for the second battery and even then there is only room for a smallish number.
