Do 265/75R16 tyres fit?

Do 265/75R16 tyres fit?

Postby waza on Wed Jun 03, 2009 8:41 pm

Has anyone tried to fit 265/75R16 to standard ML, ie NO lift. If so did the tyres scrub out?

Yes they fit on stock suspension, no rubbing. The spare just fits underneath. Going up hills you will lose about "half a gear" with the increased rolling diameter of the 265.

Run 265/75/16 Cooper STT's and as FSC says all good. Even has the advantage of correcting Speedo error although puts odometer out.

Check out the pics on my shed. Most of the guys did that size no issues.
And it looks a whole shit load better. Pretty much calibrated the speedo, but took just a poofteenth of the accelleration. Dont forget to make your spare the same size too, even if its a second hand tyre

Thanks for the replies, very helpful and yes the tyre upgrade does improve the looks. Albeit I am after the AT instead of HT tread, not to mention the extra ground clearance. Was thinking of 265/70R16 but the small amount of height increase from the OM tyres seem hardly worth the effort? Though there would be less impact on acceleration, gearing and fuel economy. I am still waiting to hear if a 50mm body lift can be done without the drive train shudder, but that’s another story.
If I may indulge on your tyre experiences for a little more info it would be appreciated.
Was there a huge difference in the fuel economy with the larger rolling diameter?

Do you mean suspension lift? A body lift doesn't move the drivetrain at all. :?:

I was refering to suspension lift and the drive train shudder.

Fair enough. Plenty of lifts here have managed to get rid of the shudder. This thread should help you out.

I have Bridgestone 265/75 16" LT A/T's fitted and no probs at all with scrub etc. As for noise and handling - it depends on each individual tyre choice. Different tyres have different noise levels, handling, performance off and on road and fuel economy.

For me - Im very happy with tyre choice as I do 20,000km a yr on road and about 5000 off road  but they arent noisy, handle well and perform good enough for the type of off road driving I do. They fixed the speedo so it reads accurate (5% under read with stockies), but now the odo under reads by 5% - Which is also good :D

I have a lot of extra weight empty with front and rear bar work, canopy etc, but even with the larger tyres I still average about 9.6l/100km on road. So overall I am one happy camper ;)

Interesting to know how you guy's get the odo reading under cos i believe they are hooked up to the speedo. As I have checked this a number of different ways and it matches wotever the speedo is reading. e.g. speedo out by 5% the odo is too.

With stock tyres you wont see it. Its just the way its all hooked up. By fitting larger tyres, each revolution of the new tyre means you travel further, but the odo still thinks you went the same distance as before (as it comes of a device that measures revolutions). Therefore you under read in the odometer, but over read in the speedo.

Fact is - with 265/75 tyres, the speedo 'error' is corrected and it is common for car manufacturers to build in a small percentage underread in speedos.

I just re-read what I typed and it doesn't really mke sense. Can anyone else explain it a bit better then me ?

i have 285s and i still have heaps of power. so no, i wouldnt say a noticable drop.

maybe a noticable increase in fuel consumption

Re: speedo and odometer:
I have heard new cars are sold with speedos adjusted 5% over actual reading to ensure people don't speed, eg if they have bigger tyres. The odometeres are correct though
Bigger tyres means the speedo is now correct (if you get a tyre with a 5% bigger circumference) but the odometer is now 5% over.

Just wondering if anyone has 275/70/16's on their triton without a lift? Or, would anyone know if these will fit without scrubbing?

Overall diameter will fit they are only 791mm where as a 265/75 is 803 so you should be right.
The standard tyres have a diameter of 749mm.
I think you will have trouble with the width on the rim as i am not sure they can be fitted to the standard rim.

Thanks KT....these, hopefully, will be going onto 16x7 steel rims. I couldnt find any 265/75/16 tyres that were as good a price as the 275/70/16 Silverstone MT-117's but if they wont fit on the 7" rim then I may have to go for something else.

If you are getting ml-vr08's rims there 16x8 (I think) so there all good up to 285 width.

does this mean the speed will show the actual correct speed as in 60kms is 60kms as apposed to say doing 55kms when the spedo is showing 60kms?

Also with the odometer with the bigger tyres when i travel 10kms the odometer shows 12kms? is that right or is it the other way around?

The other way round for the odometer. They're actually reasonably accurate with standard tyres.

so to clarify, this weekend when i put on 265/75/r16s my speedo will be spot on so i wont get any fines or anything?

my kms shown will show on the odometer as 0.95km for every 1km traveled due to the 5% difference
